Time for a new radiator? 1999 monaco with 8.3 Cummins and side mount

Howdy,

I just purchased an oldie but a goodie. After I got it home I figured I'd take it to a local shop for a safety inspection, they said the radiator fins are crusty and I should think about a replace or recore. It's not leaking and from the picture it looks like the paint has just worn off of the copper fins.it's a side mount and they are wanting $2500 in labor only, then I'm sure parts will be another $2500 for a new radiator.

Anybody with experince or suggestions?

It is possible your radiator has corroded and is in need of replacement.

The side mount radiator is not hard to remove but it does take time & time is money.

I had to replace mine in 2015 because of road debris. Total cost was ~$5600. While this was being done I went ahead and had the CAC inspected and rebuilt for $1650.

I bought a radiator from CG&J out of Alabama for $2500 delivered. You can contact them and see if they have a pattern for your rig. Radiators

Here's a quick picture. It seems the paint worn and the copper fins are showing. Can I clean them and re paint?

Coolant doesn't pass through the fins. Get some cleaner for A/C fins at Home Depot and then paint would be my approach.

Excellent, cleaner and re-paint. Thanks!

Going to inspect more closely and then clean and repaint - thanks!

Get a look at the very bottom where debris might accumulate.

X-2 I would try some A/C core cleaner first. The core cleaner seems to have rust inhibitors in it.
I am am guessing here that your radiator is on the left side and judging from the angle of the rust pattern, it appears to be getting some debris thrown up across the front of it. Thoughts?

I would bet that is the lower corner that is getting hit from the rear tire. Mine looks somewhat like yours in the same spot.
Personally I would just clean it. Not paint as it could make matters worse

Would paint clog fins or create hot spots?
