Hi All, We plan to pull a Toad 4 down on our next trip and we started thinking. What are the Toll Road costs for towing a Toad. we live in LI NY and have to pass through many many Toll roads or Toll Bridges to get anywhere. How are the Toads charged? We used to own a Classic GMC Motorhome and it used to cause tremendous fights at the Toll Booth to get them to accept the same Toll as a class C or a class A with Dual wheels on the rear since we had Tandem single wheels in the rear. Most Tolls have categories now for Motor Homes. The circumstances were changed when EZpass went into common usage. But what about Toads towed 4 down?? I know we will pay more but is there a special category?
thanks
Robert

As I recall from our trips encountering toll road, we have paid per axle. In our case (tow 4 down) the charge has been for 4 axles.
I am sure you will get a more specific and competent answer later in the day.

Yes, the EZ pass has to be a commercial version where you state how many axles you have. When I travel from Maine to Georgia I do not go via I-95 because it is $35 to get out of Delaware and is $65 to get over the George Washington Bridge in NYC because I have a tag axle and the toad. The New Jersey turnpike will hit you hard also.

Hi Barrier2,
Every toll jurisdiction is different. It depends on what governing authority passes to them the law they implement. In Florida, I pay double! Yep, if I unhooked the toad and paid separately, the toll would be 1/2 as much as when I'm towing. For me, the state is trying to make the OTR trucks pay and pay and pay. Due to the 4 axle count when I'm towing, I'm thrown into their category.

Robert is talking about the EZpass which is the automatic toll pass used all over the NE. Like I said you have to ask for the commercial version of the EZpass which is a different office and you tell them how many axles you have.

The one thing I can advise you is to make sure you take the E-Z pass off the windshield of your toad and put it in the foil wrapper. I don't think they hit you as hard with the toad in NY that way.

And 4 axles in one combo is considerable more than double 2 axles. They really sock it to a towed anything.

On the PA Turnpike the tolls are by weight. I paid ~$51 (with EZ-Pass) to take our toad and MH from I-70 (coming in from OH) to West Chester. I looked it up afterwards and it corresponded to a weight >30,000 lbs which was correct. (I had the toad's EZ-Pass sensor in foil).

Guess I'm glad we live on the West coast! Never been on a toll road yet, there just aren't that many out here.

I don't get up on 520 and the one proposed on The Columbia (Columbia Crossing) is 20 years away although they've already spent $130 million on studies.
I retired in 1998 after 30 years in engineering and IT with the WA DOT.

I called my friend up in New England and he told me that with a commercial EZpass that the axles are counted automatically by sensors in the road when the pass is read.
My last trip from Atlanta to Maine cost me a total of $273 one way in tolls going the way of I-95 which my DW wanted me to go and not our regular way up I-81 to I-84.

The toll costs on the Florida Turnpike (from Wildwood to Florida City) approx. $50, assuming 6 axles, RV + toad. This is with a transponder. If you use the E-Z system, where they bill you, the cost is approx. $60. A transponder can be bought by going to their web site, Sunpass, there you can determine the cost between any two exits and adjust axles if necessary.

A local toll plaza in Houston charges me $1.30 for the two axle truck. When you add the additional 2 axles for the trailer, the toll is $4.50. Kinda of a big rip off. So we try to avoid the toll roads with the trailer.
