I have a Holiday Rambler 2007 Neptune Xl towing a 07 Jeep liberty and at present do not have a brake system on the Jeep, I am thinking of adding it for safety and looking for information on what some of the better systems are out there. Also what states require towing brakes on tow vehciles.

Thanks

Gene & Joanne

First, Towing without a brake system can be considered reckless, and that can cost a lot of money if the front end of your motor home ever impacts the rear of some other vehicle.

Second: There are several good systems out there, I will speak of a few as representive of groups.

US Gear Unified Brake Decelarator.. This is an electric over hydraulic system I consider it to be the very best system out ther, Good for all types of motor home.. It uses an accelerometer in the MH, as well as a brake sensor to insure it does not activate till you press the pedal. It is purportional (You can adjust gain) and progressive (The harder you brake, the harder it brakes) and can be manually set.

M&G,, This is air/hydraulic, Good for Diesel MH's with air brakes. Will not fit on all toweds.

Air Force 1: This is a pedal pusher.. I'd rate it below the M&G but still a decent system

Ready Brake: This is a "Surge brake" if the towed is pushing on the motor home this will apply the brakes on the towed.. This is a very good system as well.

"Brake in a box" systems such as Brake Buddy, Even Brake and more. These systems are fully self contained, Features vary from box to box but one thing they all have in common.. THEY LIE.

They say "NO instalation required" but the fact is you have to install them EVERY TIME you tow..

Now, truthfully there is nothing wrong with these systems, they can be very good indeed, BUT, I have met just one person who says he NEVER forgets to install it.

Most folks do admit that if it's a short tow. say home to dealer for routine service, they may well say "Oh, it is only a few miles, it's not worth installing"..

Right... That's when you are most likely to need it per MURPHY.

And I usually eat at Murphy's every time I visit my foot doctor.

Gene I would suggest Roadmaster Brakemaster is truly a proportional brake system and the one we use with the brake away system, the installation is easy but the M&G is probably the best but a bear to install but once installed just a simple air line hook up, Air Force One is another good sys.

I would second the Roadmaster Brakemaster as a great alternative to M&G, the installation of just wasn't practical on our Honda Odyssey due to limited space on the firewall. The Brakemaster has worked very well for 6 yr/60k miles.

You don't have to be concerned about what other states require. All you have to do is comply with YOUR state's requirements.

Here's another vote for the Raodmaster Brakemaster. A pic is attached of my method of attaching the breakaway air cylinder to the brake actuation cylinder. Some towed vehicles, including mine, have very limited underhood space for mounting.

True when it comes to required driver's license. NOT true when it comes to required equipment, like overall length, triple-towing, auxiliary brake systems, etc. ...unless you intend to travel ONLY in YOUR state...

Has anyone tried to Blue Ox Patriot? I'm having trouble getting enough force from it to feel any stopping assistance from it. Under breakaway test, motorhome while idling will move the toed. Setting to (9) doesn't help either.

Toolman, Your Neptune is pre-wired from the factory for the US Gear Unified Tow Brake. I installed it on my Jeep and it works great.

I have a ReadyBrake and really like it. If I needed a brake and a towbar, the same company makes an all-in-one called a Ready Brute. Check them out a Night Shift Auto. Find them on Google. HarveyP
