Are you having to pull a fuse or disconnect the battery to tow? If not I cant see how towing the Jeep could cause the problem unless you are getting a feed back from the toad lights and giving the computer a false signal, If you are pulling a fuse a simple solution is to add a charge line from the Chassis battery to the toad battery.

Bjo, just a little confused, is it the key that want lock the door or the FOB that want work. If it is the FOB then it could be a result of the install. Who did the wiring for you, did they use a pre made plug in kit or did they splice in. Just a few things to thank about. Hope this helps.

Help ! Jeep tow question
I am purchasing a 1997 Jeep Wrangler , 5 speed. I plan on getting a blue ox for towing, but I have read several methods for towing. I'am very confused, some say put the transfer case in neutral and the transmission in gear, others say both should be in neutral. And do I need a battery disconnect ?
Thanks
Tom

I have towed my 04 wrangler 5 speed about 15000 mi. Transfer case in neutral and transmission in 5th. Book says any gear so I chose 5th. I had to leave key in ignition and turn enough to unlock steering but electrical is off. I did not need to disconnect battery.

That's what the majority say, and I will take your advise. I saw an article that said a guy was pulling a jeep in this manner, when the transfer case somehow jumped out of neutral and caused a bad accident, I don't see how that could happen, but I had to ask.
Thanks

I agree. I have many years of towing multiple Wranglers and many thousand of miles. Adding that if auto transmission it should be in park.

We finally got the answer to why the Keys wont lock the doors and what we have to do . we have the "Even break System" The Monitor and the ICZX transmitter is on the same 433 mghz As the locking system is set on the same Mghz. So we have to change the Everbreak setting,
This is on a Jeep Cherokee 2011
so when we do I will let you no if it's a easy task.
Happy Travels

Not to hijack this thread, but it would take something very significant to apply a constant force on the Wrangler's transfer case shifter to put it in gear when going down the road. It is a lot more likely that someone left the transfer case in 2wd or 4wd high, and the transmission in neutral then the transmission was pushed into gear.
I know someone that toad a wrangler over 100 miles with the steering locked, trust me, that is hard on tires and steering hardware. They didn't notice until arriving at the destination and noticed the front tires were scrubbed smooth.

One more question, where I'am going to get my blue ox set-up said that if I tow a jeep, that they would not recommend a braking system for the jeep, being that the jeep is very light weight. Is this true?

I tow a 2010 Jeep Wrangler 6speed manual 4wd. transfer case in neutral and transmission in neutral. According to my manual, the reason for placing in a gear, say 1st or other is to verify that the transfer case is indeed in neutral. After verification, then it goes to neutral also. I have air actuated brakes, air fed from the coach air brakes, Brakemaster 9000, manufactured by Roadmaster Inc. and they do indeed come in very handy. This unit also has a breakaway system. (that makes me a little nervous) The unit stores enough air to actuate the brakes in a breakaway event. I also use portable magnetic brake/turn lights instead of wiring into jeep.

I tow a 2002 Wrangler XJ with 5 speed manual. Have towed it over 20,000 miles. Operator manual states that the proper towing configuration is transfer case in neutral and tranny in gear - any gear - I use 5th gear. Purpose of having tranny in gear is to keep the inner workings of the tranny from turning from frictional force, which could cause the tranny to heat up without running tranny fluid through the cooler. Brakes are required in many, probably most states, especially if the toad exceeds 10% of the tow vehicles weight. I run without toad brakes (my toad = approx. 10% of my 30,000# coach) and I have had no problems. I always use my exhaust brake for initial slowing down, and use service brakes only for the "final stop" from slow speeds or for a quick emergency stop.

Tom your jeep is over 3000 lb and brake is required in most of states and i would want a toad brake regardless of where its required or not. I think he is wrong in his.

I agree with Walt, if you have an accident one of the first thing the trooper does is check that your towed vehicle has an auxiliary brake installed & working & the majority of states the min is 3,000 ibs.
Google Brake Buddy & look on there web site, it lists all the states different requirements http://www.brakebuddy.com/Towing-Laws
