Just purchased a 2001 Monaco Diplomat in Texas and returned to Canada to fix it up . I definitely have to changeout flooring and am going with laminate(I think). One thing I have already noticed is tracking of diesel into rv at fuel stops. Is there a good product to put down on stairs and entranceway that is easy to clean up? Is there a better way besides changing shoes etc when filling up to cutdown on tracking of diesel?? Appreciate any advice. This is our first motorohome so consider me a virgin on all issues..
regards Alan from Whitby, Ontario, Canada.

No sarcasum intended but, I use a truck stop that is cleaner than what you have found.

I do like your "other" (older?? perhaps) shoes idea.

I keep a pair of old shoes and my leather refueling gloves in front lower compartment. Usually before next refuel stop I put them on the inside step and when I get to pumps I slip them on and then take them off after finishing refueling and entering coach.

Sometime I put up and see that everything around is dry and not bother to change.

But have never had a problem with tracking in any fuel.

Bob

Yeah, I usually drive in to the truck stop to see if it's clean before I decide to fuel up....NOT!

I do three things to keep from tracking anything into the coach. First, I try to watch where I step - no, I'm not being silly. Second, I started wearing loafer style shoes years ago so it wasn't a big deal to take shoes off and put them back on whenever I should, and which I always do before going through into the coach. Third, I laid out a narrow strip of carpet from the stairs to under the steering column (I have a diesel pusher so the door is at the front right corner). If I should ever contaminate the strip of carpet to the point of it being a problem, it's easy to throw it out and get a new one - it's just a small strip of carpet. You could also use two or three "welcome" carpet size carpets instead of one longer trip.

I use Shubees which you can find here ShuBee.com - Shoe Covers | Coveralls | Gloves | Surface Protection | Cleaners | Safety | Tools. Look for the light blue shoe covers. Easy on, easy off, and throw away when you want. They only sell by the case but then you've pretty much got a lifetime supply.

Trouble with diesel is that even though the area or the pump handle looks clean there is always some residue.

My outside Crocs stay on the ledge above the steps or in my compartment under the step and I change into my inside slippers. No outside footware in our home.

I tend to fuel at cleaner places like Mekanic does. Kroger brand grocery stations are generally very clean and well kept. Plus if you buy your groceries there you'll get a discount thru their card program. Valero has been good this year too. Yes you do have to run your card twice or sometimes 3 times to fill up.

I know some of you think you are too big to get in and out of those tight places. My MH is only 43 feet and a Chevy Malibu toad on back only adds 22 feet. So, with a little planning and timing like I do, maybe you could get in those places too.

I avoid truck stops like the plague. Dirty, oily, greasy, haven't been cleaned since new. And you get to make 2 trips in to stand in line if you want a fillup. What joy that is.

Ken

When we bought our coach in 2008, we intended to replace the carpet immediately. In 2009, we were using the coach and had not replaced the carpet. Late one night we stopped at a truck stop for fuel. After filling the tanks, we parked for the night.

We awoke in the morning to discover that we had tracked heavy black gooey asphalt type of grime all over the carpet. It absolutely ruined the carpet. So.... we replaced the flooring as soon as we arrived home.

It was a good lesson. We are very grateful that it happened to the old floor that we had always intended to replace. Since then, we are very careful at truck stops, and wear a pair of different shoes while fueling up.

I also watch where I step and always wipe my feet on the matted step before I come in and NEVER tracked anything inside.

I keep a pair of these disposable booties next to the steps before exiting. Never any tracks inside or runners to clean. I also use disposable golves. I really don't care how goofy I look walking in to pay. Actually I have never even seen anyone notice them.
