Transmission in slow traffic
It was nearly 90 degrees when we got caught in a 2 hour traffic jam. On a bridge where we could not
Pull off. We were just moving a few feet every 10 minutes. Our transmission started to heat up it got as high as 205 degrees when we finally got out of the jam
How can I cool down the transmission in a case like this.
Bill

Shift into neutral or park when stopped.

You don't say what year, make or model of coach you have, but our '06 Dynasty transmission NORMALLY runs right at 205 degrees. It always has. Our engine runs around 200, normally.

Trans temp is not a concern until it get to 250 degrees - then you need to cool it.

Put it in neutral...the torque converter slipping longer than normal will heat the oil. Hopefully you know to put the brakes on. Recently caught in a fatal accident backup so shut the engine off and turned on the TV.

Like others have already said, put trans in neutral every chance you get.
The worse is when traffic is just crawling along at walking speed, without ever coming to a complete stop. Mine has crept up to 225* in that situation.

good doc - https://www.rvtechlibrary.com/transm..._operators.pdf
page 24
CAUTION: Do not idle in D (Drive) or any forward range for more than five minutes. Extended idling in D (Drive) can cause transmission overheating and damage. Always select N (Neutral) whenever time at idle exceeds five minutes.

Since your trans cooler is within the radiator your trans temp will or should remain close to your engine coolant temp. In that heat and stop and go traffic I imagine your coolant temp crept up to the approx the same temp. As mentioned, 205+ is not a worry for the trans. 250 is the ceiling.

I thought all DP's have a radiator "sandwich", which consists of coolant radiator, charge air cooler, Hydraulic oil radiator, transmission oil radiator(not connected to coolant radiator).
With gas engines in autos, the tranny oil does flow through the bottom coolant radiator tank. This is to heat the tranny oil quicker for better operation, or so i learned many decades ago in automotive school.
