Tucson Screw Up

So, we are at Lazy Days KOA in Tucson. We had a good rain last night and I left the Carefree of Colorado Marquee front door awning extended, and it filled up like a bowl with about 4 gallons of water. I thought I could just retract it and the water would dump out. However, something broke in the gears between the motor and awning roller. The motor runs, but the roller does not move. I am probably not the first one to do this, so I thought I would get any helpful advice from this group, before I go talk with the Lazy Days repair service writer.

This is a 2007 Diplomat.

Tucson Screw Up

Good luck! If it's like other Carefree awnings, there is a cap that attaches to the end of the roller. The steel drive shaft from the motor goes into this cast aluminum cap. The shaft may be square or round with flats that facilitate turning the cap thus the roller. The hole in the cap wears/strips and the shaft turns but the cap/roller doesn't. The bad part ... the cap is a $5 part but Carefree, I don't believe sells the cap separately so you need to buy the motor assembly to get the cap and the cost is over $200! I think I paid about $264. I trust my dealer so I don't think that they cheated me. Hopefully, you may be able to find just the cap. Good luck!

Forget Lazy Days. The service dept. is horrible. Get a mobile guy to come out or go across to La Mesa. They have a lot of the techs that used to be at Lazy Days.

been there done this. there have been a few updates to this system, the one i ended up with was a solid end cap that engaged the roller- much easier to install than the one that has two flatbars. i got one direct from carefree and it did not work. they sent me another one and all was good. kind of a pain to install and get the limits right, but doable with a six foot ladder- eight footer would be better. got mine for about $100 direct from carefree and they come with reasonably good instructions

Just a word of caution to Girard owners. Never had a problem with the door awning, but one day I paid no attention to the rain. The main awning filled with water. In my infinite wisdom, I decided to re-track the awning to dump the water. I wound up-breaking one of the scissor joints. $1800 layer it was fixed.
