Tusayan-Durango-Wheat Ridge, Road OK for Class A

My family has a trip planned this month using Hwy 160 and Hwy 285 thru Colo. Pagosa Springs sounds scary as I can still remember some of the words to the "Wolf Creek Pass" song of long ago. Is anyone here familiar with this road and care to comment? Thanks.

Great route! Take your time, use your gears. You don't show what you will be driving, but if you have tow/Haul or Exhaust brake, use them.
Might as well check out 4 Corners and Mesa Verde NP. Stop and use Pagosa springs.
The train ride in Durango or Chama. We enjoyed our trip across the Million Dollar Highway

I'll be driving a 1995 Dynasty with a well lubricated PacBrake.

Good timing - we will be in that area as well - end of july, 1st of August - and wondered the same....

We heard north out of Durango on 550 was stupendous and doable with a 43' DP with toad,
is thru Pagosa Springs betta?
Thanks in advance !

A video of the Million Dollar Hwy:

Click the first pic for 160 east up to Colo Springs,
then the second for 550 north thru Montrose....

It is stupendous We drove from Grand Junction, through Ouray, Silverton, and Durango in Sept. 2014. A few days in Silverton. We were on our way to the Balloon Fiesta in ABQ. the trees were in their greatest spender. A 40 ft DP pulling a Toad, Great Trip. Pagosa Springs and Chama in 2012.
By the way I have lived in CO and now WA, cross the Rockies 2 times a year, I like the mountains.

The last stretch just outside Ouray can give you the pucker factor. Fog line in one stretch IS the edge of the road. That is the only stretch that was of concern to me. You can also go through Dolores on 145 to Telluride.

KOA in Ouray was surprisingly nice when we were there.

Johnboytoo, that video is showing going from Silverton towards Ouray...it looks different coming the other direction.

The Durango to Silverton train was amazing! Get the better car for sure.

We are in Cortez now. The ride from Tusayan to Cortez was uneventful. Didn't notice any hills that concerned me and I am not very experienced. Nice ride and lots of semi-desert. Mesa Verde was great, just got back an hour ago. On to Salt Lake tomorrow.

Wolf Creek pass is certainly doable because people in all kinds
of RVs do it all the time .
With that it is not for the faint of heart .
I suggest that you spend a night and day in South Fork just east
of Wolf Creek and drive over to Pagosa Springs in your tow car .
You will enjoy the drive more and decide if you want to drive
the moho over .
Just before downtown Pagosa there is a ice cream / hamburger
shop on the right where we always stop for ice cream , good stuff .
There are a couple of great pull outs on Wolf Cr that you won't
be able to do in the coach .
I've driven most of the high passes in Colo but now that I'm
mature ( old ) I prefer the toad .
I'll drive the passes when necessary but don't feel the need to
conquer the mountain anymore .
About 3 yrs ago I saw what looked like a new Prevost with
an Escalade that had run up one of the runaway truck lanes
on Wolf Cr .
Scary for them , I imagine .
BTW hwy 550 north out of Durango is as scenic as any I've been
on but is a white knuckle drive even more than Wolf Cr.
I recommend that you ride the train from Durango to Silverton .
The train ride is spectacular .
