As I look at the dash I am unsure what this gauge is for. I assumed it was oil temp but as I look at it I realize it could be Trans temp also.

Thanks in advance
Mat

Good question, Mat. Mine looks exactly like yours and it is a source of curiosity to me. It rarely moves. Your needle position is precisely where mine is when the ignition is on or off, going down the road or stopped. The only time it moves is when I'm jockeying the coach around while parking and then it climbs as high as 200'ish.

I had the Cummins shop look at it and they said it was behaving normally.

Is that the way yours works?

Thanks,

That is a transmission oil temp gauge. The "gear" icon indicates the transmission and if it had an icon of a "crankcase" it would be engine oil temp.

I should have phrased my post more carefully. I KNOW it's the transmission oil temperature gauge. I had a discussion about it with the mechanic and service writer at the Cummins shop last month.

My curiosity lies in the gauge's behavior. What range of temperatures do people see on this gauge when attached to an Allison 3000MH transmission? Under what conditions? e.g. uphill, downhill, hot outside, toad vs no toad, etc.

Thanks,

Under "Normal" conditions that is where mine runs. I have only one good trip on mine (California to Tennessee) via I-40 in February. It did not fluctuate from there. But I was not pulling a car and there was not extreme temps or climbs..

Thanks for the replies.

Dave, my gauge is normally at this temp. It doesn't seem to move a lot. When we went through the hills and small mountains with the truck in tow it did go up to just below the mid mark.

Steve, I wish I had an owners manual. I have searched online and called Monaco with no luck. I was told by monaco when I first bought the coach they were working with a new company to reprint manuals and would contact me when it was available. So hopefully that will be an option in the future.

Mat

On my Sig it moves back and forth between 177 and 184* depending on if I am climbing a step hill or not. Like waht was said they pretty well are the same temp as the motor.

Near as I can tell what most people see is a pretty narrow range of movement. Given the coarse scale and range of temperatures on the gauge, there is not a lot that can be expected in terms of precision.

My gauge moves very little. While the engine coolant temperature varies from 180 to 195 depending on load and ambient outside temperature, the transmission temperature stays pretty much where the one in Mat's picture is.

The thing that is most perplexing to me is that the gauge does not peg the low end when the ignition switch is turned on after the coach has set in forty degree temperatures for days, weeks, months. The gauge's needle is right there at 160'ish and moves very little except when maneuvering while parking.

The coach owner's manual does not address this behavior. It says what the "normal" range is (160-200) and that temperatures below 140 and above 260 will return an error condition when attempting to check levels from the keypad. The Allison owner's manual does not say a lot more. It says that the transmission is overheating if the sump oil gets above 250.

Since I've just had the fluid changed and the shop said all was good with the old fluid and that gauge is working properly there is nothing more to be done. No need to borrow trouble. These motor homes offer plenty of naturally occurring, obvious problems as it is!

Mat, check on the Monacoers board on Yahoo!. They have a lot of information about parts and specifications for older Diplomats. If there are particular bits of information you're looking for, let me know. My 2001 owner's manual may have something. I don't think there are a lot of differences between 2001 and 2002. That said, the owner's manual is not always the last word. Mine shows a side-radiator chassis while the coach is built on a rear-facing radiator chassis.

Your Aladin system will tell you both your engine water and your transmission fluid temperature.
