I think now I'm just going to order a new skylight and do the whole job rite. trouble is I don't have much time I may just use floor marking tape on the crack for now and do the job when I get back in the november
John, If I was going to install a new skylight, I would strongly consider using Eternabond, understanding that a future removal would be quite a bit of work using a heat gun. However, using Eternabond practically eliminates any possibility of a leak. You could also use eternabond on the crack until you got back.Roof Leak Repair Products & Sealing Tape | EternaBond®

eternabond

Is eternabond that gooey stuff that turns black over time if it is I had some on the roof to end cap seams and never really liked the look of it worked fine but always looked tacky.

That's what I thought I don't like the way that tape collects dirt and everything else that happens nearby. I have a new outer skylight coming from AIA in Denver. What a job separating the inner and outer pieces there put together with double sided body tape. I put the old one back on to keep things dry till the new one comes, than I'll do it all over again. There is a utube video showing how to do the job and they call out some sealant I never herd of. That's not for me.
