12 VDC Receptacle
There has been a few occasions where I was using a 12 VDC tool around the trailer, inside and outside, and could have used a 12 VDC receptacle on the trailer to plug into instead of carrying a 12 VDC jump starter around with me.
Is there some reason there are no 12 VDC receptacles built into the trailer and has anyone tried installing them?

I've added a couple to my rig. Easy enough to retro fit where I want them rather then a designer thinking where they would be most useful.
This one is for LED light strip on the awning roller. The white piece is an RF dimmer controller. I have another on the other side of the coach to power a potable satellite antenna. Water resistant marine or motorcycle outlets work best both inside and out. Couple of $ on Amazon.

I have looked at the marine and motorcycle receptacles. Do they require a special plug to maintain the waterproof seal or can any cigarette lighter style plug work?

We have one built-in the bedroom TV cabinet area from the factory. I've installed them in the utility area on roadside bay panel. Nothing to it. Just know your amp rating on the circuit and don't overload it.
I thought they put them in the Limiteds and didn't the Winslows. rockin'

When we first bought the trailer I looked in the obvious places for a 12 VDC receptacle. Never looked in the bedroom TV cabinet though.
Was planning on installing a receptacle on each side of the basement compartment attached to the paneling panels that cover the access area to the generator compartment. Then mount one inside that is easily routable through the basement. Will put all three on a line from the battery with an in-line fuse. Will determine amperage at that time.

What do you want to power with a cigarette lighter 12VDC outlet?

I used mine to charge GPS, phone, etc (when no shore power, before we had an inverter) and for an emergency need for a 12V air compressor. rockin'

As Rockin', I use a 12V air compressor, a 12V impact wrench to remove the lug nuts when changing a flat, and other uses when not connected to shore power.
Also have thought about running a 110 VAC line from the inverter to the front wall of the kitchen. Put a wall socket in the kitchen and plug into inverter. Have a 1500W inverter for the refrigerator with a load of only a few amps.

You can't pull that much juice through a cigarette lighter plug.
My 12V compressor draws too many amps for that style plug. It has clips directly to the battery.
Have you used the impact wrench with cigarette lighter plug to remove all the lug nuts and replace? I would be surprised if it has adequate torque to remove the lug nuts without blowing a fuse.
I have a 20V cordless impact wrench for lug nuts. It works well.

Gotta agree with doc on this one. My 12V air compress is only for emergency (sets under my rear seat). Haven't run it for years. If I ran it for very long the 25A protected circuit would get hot. And I guess I've not seen a 12V impact for lug nuts (assuming 1/2" drive). Most are 18-20V battery supplied units. Usually with a 110V charger. What brand and model is yours, Carl? Just curious. rockin'

It all depends on the amp rating of the plug and receptacle.
The 12 VDC receptacle is rated for 15 amps. My little air compressor pulls 12 amps and was equipped with a 12 VDC plug. My impact wrench pulls 10 amps and was equipped with a 12 VDC plug. The impact wrench uses a type of inertial flywheel to spin up and then a clutch engages impacting the lug nut. The impact wrench is rated up to 280 ft.lbs.
I have used it to remove the lug nuts on my F450, 10 lug nuts per wheel. I removed the outside tire and rotated it so the dually valve stems were 180 degrees from each other. The lug nuts were torqued to 165 ft.lbs.
And before a discussion on the location of the valve stems on a dually starts, it is just my preference. I don't like both stems in the same location and it is easier to find the stem when it is directly across the wheel from the other. Old habit from my truck stop working days.

Just a note, most 12 volt air compressors will not handle high altitude. I burned one up at Eagle Nest, NM.

Thanks for the info Carl. Learn something new today. Not to get off on another subject but will. My old dually I always staggered the valve stems 180* just like the factory. Made it so easy to check the tire pressures, etc. On my newer Chevy dually, they have 17" wheels and come with the V/S together. I tried to stagger them, but it doesn't work with the slots in the wheel. Another words they can't be staggered 180*. What a pain in the a**. I put them back to the way they came from the factory, just added longer V/S to make it at least a little bit easier to check pressures. Just FYI. rockin'
