So I just bought a 1981 18 footer, dual axel gooseneck in pretty good shape. Most of the running lights were working, so I started changing out the ones that weren't. Mistake: did not turn lights off while changing bulbs. I shorted one on the top of the back. All running lights went out. All other lights still work. I checked the fuse in the truck - it's fine. Lights work on the truck. Checked the 12v fuses in the converter. They're fine. Looked in every place I could think of for what I assume is a small batch of in-line fuses, one of which should be the one that I blew.

WHERE ARE THEY??!!!! I'm going crazy!!!!!!

...breathing again...

It's not an emergency. I can call Peterson on Monday, but I thought I'd give the internet a try. What the heck? You people are all smarter than I am, anyway. I'm just a numb-skull who changes bulbs while the lights are on...

Squids it's unfortunate your first post is about your running lights being out. But congrats on your Excel. Not knowing your unit can't speak from experience....that said__

...have you checked for voltage at the 7-pin plug on the truck, I know you said you checked the fuses in the truck, but in case there is one that's not plainly seen. I say that because I'm not sure there is an inline fuse on the trailer for the running lights. My 2001 unit doesn't that I'm aware of and my utility trailer as well. Believe the trailer lights would be protected by the TV exept for the 12vdc input line.

...I would assume you have tried checking the running light bulbs to ensure the 'spark' didn't blow the bulbs. Would guess they are the standard 12vdc auto bulbs.

...if all else fails, try pulling the fixture that 'sparked' and check the wire connection and socket.

AHA!!!

I found the fuses. They were (of course) in the one door I didn't open. Under the sink in the bathroom in the back. A nice little fuse block for running lights, L & R turn signals. That's all there is in the block. And and the running lights fuse was blown. Replaced. Lights working again, replaced all bad bulbs plus two amber fixtures. Life is good again.

Now on to the other stuff....

Thanks for your help!

Squids,

Welcome to the forum. What's a 1981 Excel look like? Could you post a photo for us?
