If your rig has 50 amp service, then you would need a 50 amp surge protector.

If you only have a 30 amp rig, then the 30 amp unit is all you'll need. You will gain nothing with a 50 amp surge protector.

If you buy a 50 amp surge protector and use an adapter you can connect to your present coach. If you buy a coach with 50 amp service then you will not need to buy another surge protector for the new coach.

Ray,
Your Excel is 50 amp and I recommend you go with a 50 amp surge protector -- regardless of the amps you may be using.

Ditto what the Chief says. Much better protection.

Had a 30A Surge when I bought 50A MH. Am using 30A surge when only have 30A power and not using surge protection when I have 50A power. My reasoning, if only 30A is available is likely an older campground more likely to have elect service problems than where 50A is available in a more modern campground. Also I don't get any trade in on my existing that cost $2-300 against new at $2-300. Opinions??? Thanks.

I suggest a system like THIS for maximum protection.

Dirk, this is a good system and at a great price! I too would highly recommend it.

I can't really agree with your logic. Ligthning does not inquire on the way down if the park below has 30 amp or 50 amp. And electricians make just as many mistakes now as they did years ago.

Personal example: our home park has 50 amp service, installed about 30 years ago. It's failing now. Last summer I reset my Progressive surge protector numerous times because I was getting 130v on one leg as measured by the display on the Progressive HW50.

I installed the Progressive and the Autoformer for low voltage.

I have the Progressive Industries hard wired model also with remote monitor. Easy install and bought from RV Upgrades. Why risk damage being without one. It only takes one time and you will be replacing electronics in your coach at a much greater cost.

Progressive Industries literature says can be installed to protect shore power or shore power and generator. Technician gave me estimate to install of 1-2 hours. Said should install for shore protect only not necessary to protect against generator power which is cleanest/most reliable/ Opinions? Thanks.
