Arctic Circle and beyond

We were up on the Dempster Highway in the Yukon two weeks ago. Went to the Aritic Circle and made it beyond into the Northwest Territories until an Artic Blizzard forced us to retreat back to a more sheltered area spending one night above the Aritic Cirle.. The area was so impressive.

What a trip. Not for the faint of heart I assume. I would love to do that someday.

Nice. Did it in a submarine, was freaking cold under water.

Would love to do it in our coach sometime.

Enjoy.

If you plan to take Dalton Highway up to Prudhoe Bay, be mindful of closure on June 25 and 30.

We are in Tok. Will be in Fairbanks tomorrow. We took the Top of the World and Taylor highways from Dawson. Picked up a little mud...

This Canadian/Alaska adventure has been and is blast. We've done the Top of The World Highway, what views from there. Above timberline for many miles. downtown Chicken Alaska is a hoot. The day we were there, over 1,000 people gathered for a musical event. Now we're done near Denali for a week before heading towards Homer. Can't seem to get enough bandwidth to upload pics right now, but will at some point.

Just for the record, I'd NEVER take 5th up on the Dempster Highway again, a truck camper or Class B rig are fine.

How does it compare for factor to An All-American Road in Wyoming & Montana | Beartooth Highway | Montana & Wyoming Scenic Drives from Red Lodge MT to Cooke City MT

Max1, When I was going to attempt those named roads, we got snowed out. So I can not really compare to them.

The Dempster has many miles of sharp shale road bed. Produces a very slick mud when wet. Combined with the chemical sprayed on the road, it is quite slick if wet. I grew up driving mountain roads in NM and Co so have some experience with such things. Some of the grades are very step. I ran it in 4 wheel high first gear and just barley made those grades in four inches of slick mud. Should have slipped on down into 4 low range, but in mid grade did not want to do that.

While we did not have any tire issues some folks had up to five flats in the first 272 miles. That shale likes to eat tires, very sharp stuff.

Semi trucks with double trailers run that road at break neck speeds. Meeting them on some of the tighter turns is not much fun. Keep in mind some 3,000 people live at the end of this road and they need supplies.

I think we were the largest RV on the road at the time and got some funny looks.

If the road were dry I think it might be a different story. But its some 500 miles of rough surface each way, 1,000 miles total.

All said, that segment has been the highlight of this trip so far. If you can, just do it.
