I have a 2009 Excel 36tke with an Atwood 10 gal. hot water heater. I keep getting a Reset Light on the panel in the bathroom both on electric as well as LP. I'm suspecting water over temp failures. Is this reset light the same as a lock out? Any ideas would be helpful.
Thanks,
Paul & Elaine

First of all welcome guys! You are correct...if you get the reset light on both gas and electric it is a lockout. More than likely a control board issue. If it was only on gas....(three trys to light and fails), then you could have a propane supply, ignitor, or gas valve issue. And always check the green ground wire that is retained by a screw on the flute shroud. This is a major ground and can be dirty or loose. Another area to check is the wire terminal junction at the contoller. Remove and clean the connections on the board with a clean pencil eraser. I also add a little dielectric grease to the the same area to help keep moisture off the connections. Many of those connections are very low current flowing and have a hard time keeping themselves "clean".
I've found that when you have an issue with either gas or electric.......switching back and forth when one of the two has an issue......then you need to shut both off for 30 seconds and then go back after one at a time. The system seems to get confused and can lock out both systems otherwise. HTHs. Let us know how it turns out. rockin'

We have the same thing that has started with ours. However, it is happening intermittantly--it will be fine for a number of days, then all of a sudden the reset is on.
We originally had it happening on electric. We switched to propane, and all seemed fine for about a week, then it came on one day with the propane on.
The one thing that seems to have changed significantly according to my DW is that she had noticed that the hot water (especially on electric which has never seemed as hot as when on propane) has become MUCH hotter. She had commented perhaps a week or so before the first reset incident that the water seemed much hotter. So we are assuming one might be connected to the other as we never even knew the reset was on that panel before this began???
Any thoughts?

May want to check the basic items I gave Alex in the previous post. May have a thermostat going south too. It doesn't take long to do the basic checks. The green ground wire connection is a good thing to check for intermittent issues. rockin'

Thanks for your response, yes my problem is the same as yours, and now I really think the hot water heater in heating the water so hot it triggers a temperature safety fault and "Locks Out" the heating process, giving us a Reset Light. It makes sense that we my have a bad thermostatic device that turns off the heater when proper temperature is reached or the control board is bad. I will check and clean all electrical connections including the ground wire. If it still fails I still have warranty on this unit and will seek service next week. Hope this rain stops soon up here in NY!
Thanks,
Alex

Thanks for your response, everything you said makes good sense, all I need is a dry day up here in the Adirondacks to further my ts and clean connections.

I think there is a prceedure to reset after a lock up. A call to atwood might help. 574-264-2131. If there is one, please post it.
