I was told I could send my broken blinds back to the supplier and they would re-string them for free. Does anyone know of this? If so, do you have the company name/address?

First I've heard of the "free" service -- I would call the manufacturer and ask the question. Please let us know what you find out, something most of us will face at some time in the future. Inherent problem with these blinds as the strings tend to deteriorate with age and UV exposure. We experienced the same problem with the MH we previously owned after several years.

Jack, from Excel's service center told us to drop ours in the mail to them and they would restring it and send it right back...Took longer getting the blind down out of window and back up again than to get it back from the factory...LOL . Great service once again !

Just a thought -- why doesn't someone produce a dual-pane window with the blinds inside, between the panes. The only minus I can think of is maintenance -- not sure how they repair the blinds in windows built this way.

I don't understand why folks don't just do the restring themselves. The hardest part is getting the darn curtain off the wall. Purchase the string from your local blind shop or the internet. I've done several of ours. When the pleats finally wear out, we're gonna use something else. The day/nite guts are pretty weak in my opinion. As long as I can replace the strings cheaply I gonna keep 'em.....cause I'm cheap and on a "fixed" income! Tom

While on the subject; how do you get the curtain/valance off the wall?

There are 2 retainers that hold the blind in the window. The releases are on the window side of the blind. Put the blind up as far as possible. Using your fingers, feel the release tabs. Push the tabs toward the window to release. These tabs are pretty robust, and requires some strength in your fingers. It may take a second person to rotate the blind assembly out. As I said before, this is the hardest part of the job. Once out, you can look at how the retainers are designed/function and next time you do it, it will be much easier. After you get the blind released, don't forget to remove the strings from the spools on the wall. Like many other things, sometimes it comes out pretty easy and other days it's tough. It a good idea to do this before happy hour!
