Well, it's my turn.
My Dometic microwave/convection combo is throwing an F-5 code.
We have not used the RV for a couple of weeks.
Today I unplugged from shore power and turned off battery cut off to install a Progressive Dynamics PD9200 Charge Wizard remote pendant.
After turning the battery back on and reconnecting shore power I was greeted to an F-5 code on the microwave.
If I unplug the unit and plug back in I can set the clock and run microwave. But, within a minute the F-5 code pops up again.
Short of replacing the microwave is there anything else I can try?
It is 180 mile round trip to dealer which is a significant fuel and time expense.
Will Dometic or PI ship directly to me? I can handle the removal and installation.
This seems to be a pretty common problem. If it's a control board failure, why don't they just replace the board.
I'm bummed because we will be using it pretty heavy over the next few weeks (months, years).

Hello, read some on this, it seems that the F-5 is not a good code to get:

Sorry to hear about the dreaded F-5. It's an issue in the control board and Dometic has been replacing the ovens. Don't worry that the microwave portion of the oven will quit.....it's only affects the combo and/or the convection portion of it. What I did was to go over to the local corner RV service dealer (no sales-just service) and explained the situation. I was set up for a full winter and didn't want to tow to the corner. He got the oven from Dometic, I went and got it, installed it and took the old unit back boxed and ready for him to send back. The oven is working great (finger crossed).
I just can't believe they haven't got the F-5 issue fixed after several years of this crap. Our last rig we had....had the oven replaced on PDI. The new one did the same thing....and I just lived with that one.
PS...have a good strong able bodied person to help you. The oven is quite heavy/bulky. rockin'

Tom, how was yours installed?
Mine has 2 bolt heads accessible from the cabinet above the microwave.
Are there any other retaining bolts? Side? Back?
I'll contact PI and my dealer on Monday. I would prefer to have one shipped to me or pick up locally and install myself. It will be faster and cheaper than driving to the dealer.

Russ,
You have the 2 screws from top you already described. Then there are 2 additional very long screws at the front of the oven at the top near the corners. They go all the way thru the width of the oven. You have to remove the little black vent cover to access the screws. These screw into the large flat metal plate that is attaced to the wall behind the oven. You need to support the oven at the top while removing the screws. After the screws are unscrewed, you and your helper will have to lift the oven straight up about a 1/2" at the bottom. The bottom of the oven has some "arms" that sits in a couple of "hooks" that are made into the metal wall mounting plate. And of course when reinstalling you have to lift the oven at the bottom and hang the oven back into the supporting "hooks". Hope this makes sense. If not I'll try again. Keep us informed. Plan on a good 3/4 of a hour the first time you do this little job, cradle to grave. rockin'

You ask why Dometic has not fixed this problem.. The reason might just be that Dometic does not make convection/microwave ovens. They buy them under contract from someone else and re-label them (Actually they come already re-labeled)
I have a dometic Microwave (not convection/microwave) and the manufacturer was LG, that is Lucky Goldstar.. Used to be called just Goldstar, back when they were Goldstar they made the only microwave all but guaranteed to catch fire, and I might add the one the purchasing agent where I worked bought did just that. (Yes I know why and YES it is operator error but all the other home/office units out there have protection against this error) The one Dometic bought for me also has protection against this error, but it had other problems.. Thankfully I'm enough of an engineer and technician I fixed it (WITH GE Parts).

Tom, thanks for the info.
I've got the "official" Dometic installation manual to guide me as well.
I'll work on finding a replacement on Monday.
Worse come to worse I could buy something locally that fits the space. I don't care if it says Dometic on it. After reading of the failures, I'd prefer something else. As long as it has a stainless steel face, fits the space, works AND momma's happy, I'll be happy.

I pulled a list of service centers from the Dometic website. I contacted the closest Dometic service center to where I live. They declined to do the microwave swap and told me to return to my dealer. Sad part is I've bought a lot of supplies and parts at their store over the years. They only do consignment RV sales. Maybe they don't want to hassle with Dometic.
The selling dealer will do it. But it's a 180 mile round trip of time and fuel for a 1 hour install.
I'm still working on finding someone in my neighborhood to do the warranty swap.

Why not take it out yourself, put it in the car, drive to Granbury, get the new one and drive back. Then install it yourself. It'll save time & fuel for sure.

That is an option, but there are more than 20 Dometic service centers closer than Granbury. A little phone and email time is all it takes to contact them. I bet one of them will do it.

I replied to their email advising me to return to my selling dealer last night. I explained the situation in more detail.
They called today and told me to pull the defective microwave and drop it off at their shop and they would do the warranty exchange.
