Ok gals and guys we are almost there on our new Excel 5er. It is at the dealer and is getting the PDI. But I have a question for all of you. We ordered the dual pane windows and they are sliders. So how do you folks open a window when you are gone for the day or at night for some air circulation? Our present 5er has dual pane also but it has crank out sections on the bottom that can be cranked out to allow small amounts of air in without allowing rain in and the security of the a small opening. So how do the other Excel owners that have dual panes get air in.

I looked at the Maxxair window vent and thought that this was the solution till I went to their web site and read the installation guide and found out that you have to drill holes in the the outside frame on your window. So that is not an option for me to do on my new trailer. I also thought about window awnings and locks on the windows. This might be the way we have to go.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Butch,
Guess I'm not much help. We have the tinted thermo pane with sliders, guess that's what your talking about. We simply leave them cracked open when we're gone and if if in doubt of the area, just lock them closed. Sorry if I'm missing something here. Tom

Butch,
We open a couple of the roof vents and run the fans on low speed. Also have an awning over the large side window and sometimes leave the sliding window cracked.

Hi Tom,

Yes I'm talking about the slider windows. What I'm talking about is mainly circulation. We like to have air circulating while we are sleeping but I'm worried about a rain storm hitting in the middle of night and the wind blowing in the rain and waking up in the morning and having a wet floor. Or if we leave for the day and want to leave a window open and again a storm blows in. Our weather forcasters here are right about 25% of the time. I'm not all that worried about security mainly air flow through the trailer.

Hi John,

I'm thinking that is what we are going to do also is put window awnings on the big windows on the sliders and leave them out so we can open the windows just a little.

Thanks

Butch,
Well, as usual, I reread your message and I had missed the air circulation part you were talking about! Guess I will have to learn to read someday. Ha. We do the same as Chief and run the fantasic on low and just crack the window(s). If it's not a side blowing driving rain, you'd be surprised that rain doesn't come into the rig. Tom

Tom,

That is ok I do that myself a bunch of times. I almost swear that after I respond that the OP has edited their posts and changed it. I guess we'll try just cracking a window open a bit and see what happens. On our present 5er we just crack a window and open a vent just a little and let natural air flow change out the air. We like to try and do it without the noise of a fan. My wife just hates to hear something like that run all of the time.

Thnaks again

Butch

Your wife probably wouldn't care for me...as I'm told my mouth "runs" all the time!!
OK back to topic

This is an excellent question! I currently have only single pane windows on my 2004 Limited model and, of those that open, four are the crank-out jalousied type which allow you to open them while reducing the probablility of rain coming in.

Are all 2007 models, whether they are single pane or double pane, sliders? And, why did PI go to the sliders instead of staying with the jalousies?

Frank, my 2005 Limited has the sliding windows.

Butch, how many rigs do you have? The Dodge and Elite TK3 must be your daily users, with the Ford and Excel reserved for special occasions. -- The only reason I ask is that I'm jealous as my DW limits my "toys"! Welcome again and thanks for your contributions.

Frank,

I have 7 of the crank-out jalousied type windows on my present 5er SOB. I don't know about the single pane that PI uses but I do know the dual pane are sliders.

Chief John,

The Elite Suites is being traded in on our new Excel so we'll be down to one 5er. I had the F550 to pull the Elite and my Dodge was used on my job where a dually just would not work. I didn't even put down that I keep my Harley with me also. Luckly we stay at one location for our work for a long time. It gets real fun moving all of this as my wife has her car also. I want to get my Excel and see where I am on weight and if I have capacity I'll see if they can add the lift for my Harley later. I didn't want to add it new and then find out I didn't have enough left to haul the bike also. That would have been a real bummer.

Oh and I have a really great wife (and she doesn't even read these sites)so I really didn't need to say it.

Thermopanes:
Excel currently uses a true thermopane window with it being 2 windows with the air gap between them. Double Tree has a exclusive with Herr windows that will run out this year, but they glue 2 window panes on top of each other, thus allowing them to have the crank out style windows, which this will become open to the manufactures I believe this year. Compare the living in both units and I think that you will find the Excel windows to be warmer/cooler (temping on the temps you are in), plus to me a quieter unit overall. In review, I feel that you will be more confortable with the sliders than the crankouts, plus you get a tigher seal around the window.
Enjoy

Butch,

Having had it both ways, I agree with Tom. The sliders in the Excel are much better. Very quite and they never sweat. I think you will be well pleased with them.

That is what I have on my Elite Suites right now is the Hehr dual panes with the crank outs. They have provided excellent sound and seem to work very will in the heat and cold. If the windows in my new Excel provide better thermal and noise suppersion than I will be a very happy camper. Looking forward to getting our new unit. We are ready for it after looking at it the other day. The dealership is doing the PDI on it right now and have some parts on order from Excel to fix a few things wrong on it so I don't have to take it right back to them after we pick it up. Shortly we will be in our new rig.

Thanks for all the info guys
