John,

I think Virgil already has the big head brought about from spending the winter down in Gatorville. Running all that equipment, fixing up things for folks to enjoy. He found out that he has talent he did not know that he had!!!!

Thanks, MM. But I'm already subscribed to this forum. Each day I receive a daily email with links to updated threads. But no content. I must read each thread individually on the web site. Or subscribe to each existing thread for individual emails with content.

In the Before Time, i.e. the prior software, we received a easy-to-read daily email with all new posts for a forum. With the content of each post. Didn't need to look at the web site to read the posts. I can email you an old copy if you like.

We lost that function with this new software. Went backwards, says I and others after the "upgrade." I made my views known (My post), and have said little else until this current thread. No progress on restoring this type of email. So I don't read and participate as much as I did. And I suspect I am not alone.

We saw a similar problem on the Escapees forum after their upgrade. Usta have an easily read daily update. Now it's a plain text email. But at least it contains all the content of all the new threads in a forum.

I have empathy for the administrators of this system. Usta be a sys admin for 10 years. But upgrades should add functionality for the users, not just for the admins. No one asked us users what we wanted and valued. And here we are.

Rockin, at first I didn’t believe you but where I was located I was connected 3Gs. Right now in Rural America I have full bars and this new software is so slow. It is like I am hooked up to the old dial up phone line. It takes me over one minute to get a page downloaded. The funny part is I get notified in my E-mail of a new post in certain threads and I get that notification one half hour before I see the post on the forum. I am sure the folks that are hooked up to broadband see no differences in the time. Now with all the adds having to download it really makes me wonder if my time on IRV2 is really worth it!

The adds around the edge didn't bother me but recently when they "forced" the adds right into the messages, it just irritates the mess out of me. Other forums don't act like this, just these guys, no wonder their post count is going down.

It's really quite simple. Just log in and the ads imbedded in the thread disappear. You can also turn off the ads in the right column. It's all explained HERE.

Ok, Mama, when I am logged in I get rid of all the ads in the first post, but guess what, now I get one big lovely ad between the first and second post. So what do I gain by being logged in? Sure is an annoyance dealing with all these ads. Is there a way in my settings to get rid of that big zit?

NOPE...just go buy some cheese and have a nice picnic!
Okay... Guys, I have an idea...What if there was a different level of membership where you paid a minimal yearly dues - but that got you and "ad-free" page when you were logged in?( And maybe even a special thing or two besides no ads?) What do you think?

MM,

I think it is too complicated now for us old people. I think that is why the forum is going downhill. Just my 2¢ worth.

Madam Administrator/Mama: You and I have had this conversation before, and I really thought that was the end of it. Boy! Was I wrong.

With broadband, I personally have little or no problem with the new software, and there does seem to be some tradeoffs. But these people are talking about exactly the problem I brought up to you before. If I came to this site for the first time as a prospective new member, and had all these ads jumping up in my face, I would not have hung around long enough to find out that once I joined and logged in, I would not have to put up with them.

I have no problem with ads, and I don't turn off the ones in the side column, partially because they are also informative at times. Besides, I just like to keep up on what is available. But the ones that jump up in my face DO NOT GET READ. I find them offensive and intrusive, and turn them off as quick as I can - by logging on.

Lastly, a comment on your suggestion about annual dues to NOT have to be bludgeoned by those pop-ups? Surely, you jest! How many of us are you trying to get rid of?

Judging by all the foregoing responses, I'm afraid the site is ticking off not only potential new members, but some old (read existing) ones as well - and I hate to see it.

Just my own opinion, of course, and we all know what opinions resemble.
FWIW,
Ken

To put everything in perspective, these sites do not run for no cost to the site owner. In order to pay for the site, he has to be independently wealthy and pay all cost out of pocket, or sell advertising to provide income for the site or charge a membership fee. An option of registering and logging in is offered as a way to reduce the number of ads.

This is not the only site on the INTERNET that is running in Tia manner using advertising to pay for the software, servers and development. Yes, it is different from what iRV2 was years ago. The site has grown and continues to grow daily. The site is not declining.

As things progress, people may have to get newer computers to take advantage of the enhancements offered on the INTERNET. Look at what has happened to DTV...you don't watch TV now unless you have a DTV. It is not possible to make advancements without loosing some of the backward compatibility.

I have been a member of iRV2 since mid-2000 and have no gripes about the way the site has progressed. A lot of sites drop to a crawling speed if you do not have DSL as a minimum to log on to the INTERNET. Time marches on and in order to keep up with time, changes have to be made...otherwise, we would still be living in caves, wearing animal skins for clothes and drawing figures in the dirt.

Seems to me we're circumventing the issue. I don't think anyone disagrees that it is necessary to generate revenue to maintain what is and has been a very good site, and that the principal means for a website is to sell advertising. We all expect to see it, and it does serve a purpose; it keeps us abreast of what is available to us as RV type folk.

The primary issue here, I think, is the form the ads take, which, while attempting to inform, are successful only at irritating. To sell ads, you need to be able to demonstrate a platform that makes them worth what you are charging. (Yes, I know you understand this, and I'm not trying to lecture.) Our only point is that if the ads are actively turning people off, they are not serving anyone's purpose - the client, the host, or the viewer/member. We do not want this site to shrink and go away, it's a great site.

A secondary issue (then I promise to stop) is the "progress," of which you speak. I recently upgraded my own pc, which has basically become another necessary appliance in the home, and my entire usage experience, including the internet, is much more enjoyable, and easier to get things done. BUT - we are mostly mature, some retired, RVers. We are NOT teenage geekazoids, who are whizbangs with these things. While the kids avidly agree that, oh boy, more ram, faster processor, etc., is the way to go, not everyone in our generation is going to jump all over that. Some are going to feel that it's not "their" site any more; I realize there is not much you can do about that.

The point being, while the site needs to stay current, and you can't do anything about those who elect to leave, let's NOT lose them because they are being driven away by an advertising assault, as opposed to good ad presentation.

OK, I promised to quit the harangue; all done.
