I would think it is due to the fact of the many illegals coming in from Mexico and flying the Mexican flag above the American flag or just flying the Mexican flag.
You would do it in a gesture of where you are from but I'm afraid it would not be seen that way in the southwest.

Good morning and thanks for your interest in flag etiquette. Most Americans, I suggest, are rather ignorant of the subject. Actually, flag etiquette is now set out in US law, at 36 USC 10. Section 175 covers your point. Properly, you should display your national flag and the US flag at equal heights. Our code provides that international usage bars displaying one national flag over another. My wife would remind me that I googed last night when I forgot to strike my colors at dusk, leaving the flag up all night without proper illumination.
I, for one, take no offense at seeing a visitor display his colors without also flying the host nation's colors but, to be correct, both should be displayed.
BTW, we're finishing up our last long weekend of the season just south of Springfield IL but must return to northeast IL later today.

Diesel Guy,
Thank you for this topic. As Doghowz3 implyed, flag etiquette is one of the most misunderstood topics around and, as US citizens, we should know better. There are many websites with US Flag etiquette and lists of do's and don'ts. Below is a link to one.......
http://www.flagandbanner.com/fab/flag.asp?cpage=etiquet...pJYCFRxNagodO3sn6g#1
Please note item 6 in the list above...
As North Americans, I don't think we can ever know enough about each other's customs and traditions nor can we do too much to respect them.
There are so many great ways to share our heritage while respecting those things that we each hold dear. The experience you share here......." A security fellow came over to him & told him that he had offened a few Rvers due to the fact that had didn't have a American flag first on top of their pole be4 the Canadian flag"..... is just plain and simple ignorance. There are few things that irritate me more than ignorant and insensitive abuse of unearned authority but unfortunately we run into it in a lot of places.
Thanks again for bringing this topic. May God bless you and your beautiful country!!

Ignorance is a kind term. People are starving and dying all over the world from such "ignorance." Best to ignore such people when you can.

If I may, would like to make added comment on this subject.
A few years ago, we were in a campground down in FL where there was a mixture of (I'm guessing here) of Canadians as well as US citizens. In front of a couple of coach's was a combination of a US flag and a Canadian flag sewing together-----meaning each flag had been cut in half and sewing together with the Stars on top and the Canadian colors on the bottom. It boggled my mind to think any true "citizen" (Canadian or US) would desecrate their country's flag(s) in this manner.

Diesel Guy,
Let me, as an american citizen appologize for the total ignorance of both the security guard and those offended by your displaying of the Canadian colors. I hope you continue to properly display your great countrys flag while visiting our country. Maybe you can now "educate" those few who are offended by your doing so.

I am a US Citizen but love seeing the Canadian Flag because it reminds me of this beautiful country. It has never bothered me one bit because I know it wasn't flown to assert a political statement, or, meant as a put-down.
However, it offends me when I see nationals of other countries creating disorder and rioting in U.S city streets behind flags of other countries, even replacing U.S. flags with foreign flags at official sites like schools and so forth.
Also I am offended by those who abuse the U.S. flag for advertising and commercial promotional purposes. For example, there is a real estate sales lady in my area who places the little stick flags in the front lawns along the sidewalk of every house in my neighborhood. Meanwhile dogs are walking around lifting their legs and kids are playing and accidentally knocking them down. It just shows a crass lack of respect in favor of promoting ones' own agenda by placing these U.S. flags in jeapoardy of inevitably getting soiled, etc. - obliging the homewowner to rescue the flag and get the attached advertising brochure.
We're selling the house and you know who I would never use!
Many folks who fly the U.S. and other flags in the U.S. are not fully versed in the finer points of U.S. flag flying law, regulations and traditions. However, I take flags in the spirit that they appear intended to be flown - mostly a demonstration of one's love for their native country - rather than to grasp for fault and nit pick to put them down due to some infraction or another.
As far as rv's go, I take flag flying like a ship at sea showing it's colors.

Geez, I wasn't aware of a problem with seeing the Maple Leaf proudly displayed ever before. Residing in the great state of Washington, our neighbors to the north regularily display their colors and rightly so.
We reside in an area which is heavily populated with immigrant workers, some of which have created a Mexican Soccer League which holds quite large tournaments. Certainly not uncommon to see their national flag displayed by several players and fans throughout the tournament.
Despite any national laws describing how and when to properly display our flag, we tend to forget that this country was created by the massive influx of immigrants whom are proud of thier heritage. Maybe someone should ask the native Americans what their thoughts are their country being overun by the ancestors of the many.
I for one an not going to detract from the patriotism one has for his homeland. Raise proud the red and white.

If I am reading the original post correctly that states in part:
"due to the fact that had didn't have a American flag first on top of their pole be4 the Canadian flag"
It appears that the Canadian Flag was being flown from the same staff over the American flag.
If that is (was) the case it is wrong.
Section 7g reads, "When flags of two or more nations are displayed, they are to be flown from separate staffs of the same height. The flags should be of approximately equal size. International usage forbids the display of the flag of one nation above that of another nation in time of peace."
Especially in the others country.
