Angry Furnace with a squeal

Hi: I'm new so hope I do this right. Got a problem. My furnace squeals. The colder it is the more I need the furnace and the louder it squeals. I think the fan needs some oil.
Can I lube it without pulling it out?
If I pull it out will the heat ducts stay conected? Will they streach that far?
I have Exel Legecy L285CL 25th Aniversery addition (1992 ?.)
Furnace is a Hydroflame M617118 8525II
Have you had this problem? Hope you can help. Thanks

When mine started making that noise, the motor needed to be replaced due to bad bearings. Oiling them may get you a little more time, but as long as you have to open everything up to get at them, you might as well replace the motor, if that's the problem.

Welcome to the Excel forum. And thanks for providing so much information up front...it helps and makes things easier.

Sorry to say, but the bearings according to the Atwood Service Manual are sealed and can't be lubed. Few bearings in this type of application are these days, or in your case back then either. But considering your units age....might be. But as was mentioned if I was going to pull it out for a bearing noise, I would replace. new motor might cost $60-80.

The ducts should be conected to the furnance case and the motor and assembly should be able to be pulled out for service.

Is it a possibility that either of the blower fans are rubbing the housing causing the noise....or for sure the bearings?

Sounds like a bearing to me - squeek not scrap. I just don't want to get the unit out and then not be able to rehook up the ducts when it goes back in. Thaks for the reply.

Let me see if I can find the web site I was on earlier that refered to removing the fan motor. You shouldn't have to remove any of the duct work unless your unit isn't like my 8500 series.

Life being what it is....I can't find the site I was on earlier. Was going to Link you to a site I was using that allowed one to download Atwood's 2007 Service Manual....but Atwood has redone their Home web site and all of the links I had to Atwood appliances are now unavailable.

If I find or can reconnect...I will post it.

Hi rhome,

Welcome to the Excel forum!!! I'm not positive, but believe that fan motor is a sealed unit and not serviceable (not lubable). Chances are you need a fresh motor, especially if the noise subsides after it runs a while and warms up. I know exactly what your unit looks like, cause we parked by one in Jacksonville, FL last winter. rockintom

Where have you seen motors at this price? What I've found are well over $100.

Would assume the question was directed to me as I was the one who mentioned prices.....I came up with the price based on a google search of Hydro flame and wasn't looking at a model when I stated the price, my error......I used this SITE, as it was the one I was on and remembered....

This SITE might be helpfull in providing price and part info.....yes, price difference in motors. On Edit: just went to this site to ensure links were made....will need to go to search and select Furnance then Atwood/hydroflame to go to the page, select your model.

Was able to find and download the Atwood 2007 Training Manuals from this SITE. Huge file and might take some time to download but worth saving if your into this stuff.

Thanks for the Attwood repair manuals I just was on the phone with them the other day and they had given out all their CDs and thought they were in the process of updating to a new CD.

Thanks for the "Site" I have it marked under my " Favorites" now. I'll get back to the project I a few days. I'll consider my options.

Returned to day from camping at Sugar Pine Point SP. Lake Tahoe. Nice!
