I have a Honda 3K, and it can weigh up to 150#. I am mulling several different ways to be able to use it. I am curious how others carry theirs on the road without back injury, and secure it from damage or theft. The pickup bed or rear trailer hitch seem to be the best options.

When we had our F-350, I kept our Yamaha 3000 generator in the bed of the truck. I tried storing it in the front of the Excel as we have the generator compartment -- bad idea! At approximately 150 lbs., it was too much for my old back to handle. Tried the cargo carrier on the rear of the 5th wheel but didn't like the excessive bouncing of the generator.

Built a plywood box with vents and doors for the generator and had the box sprayed (Line X) when our bed was coated. Worked well and was easily accessible for routine maintenance.

Cookieman,

I agonized over the same dilemma for some time and finally came to the conclusion that the Onan 5.5 KVA propane mounted in the forward compartment was the only way to go. Granted, it is expensive, but I think it is worth it not to have to worry about it. I don't use it much, but when I need it it's there. The only down side is loss of the fwd storage compartment and an additional 279 lbs of pin weight.

I have been checking out other posts, and it seems in bed is the best. Don't want to back into something and crush it. One post suggested a rubbermaid outdoor storage box with a side the came come off during run time.

We had a Yamaha 3000-watt generator with a previous fifth wheel that we kept in the back of the pickup chained to the fifth wheel hitch with a LARGE chain (not a skimpy bicycle chain which can easily be cut).

We sold that generator when we sold the fifth wheel because our motorhome had a built-in generator.

This time, we're getting 2 Honda 2000's...hooked together, they'll be enough to run our 15K A/C, and we won't have to struggle trying to lift 150#!
