I found the following on the Escapees HDT forum regarding Goodyear G614 tires....

NEW INFOR ON THE G614s. Goodyear distributer for Oklahoma told me today that if you have G614s made before november, 2006 they are subject to the same problems that older goodyears had and I experienced this past weekend. HOWEVER, the process for making the G614 changed November 1 and they now feel they have the problems solved. The incident of trouble with the G614 apparently has been much less than the problems with the older D rated tires used before the G614 was developed. This distributer feels that the problem is now solved. The issue to which they are referring is tread separation and tire disenigration at speed which causes damage to the fifthwheel.

Have any of you had trouble with the GY G614's?

Thanks Virgil -- I linked your post to the "TT & 5th Wheel - General Discussion" Forum for broader notification to other iRV2.com members.

Here is the HDT link cited by "MakinSmoke".

Thanks for the info Virgil. Knock on wood, we have had no problems yet on our 614s. I am a nut for tire pressure checks, and we usually drive a max of 60 MPH. We are about 17,200 lbs. On warmer days I do check the tire temps with a infared thermometer just to keep up my anal reputation!!

We have been FTing in this rig almost 2 years and have about 20,000 miles. I haven't checked the DOT date on the tires, but you can be assured they will be changed by the 4th year if they don't blow before.

On the HDT link there is mention of not letting the tires sit in one location for long periods of time. Is this really a legitimate concern? What constitutes a long time? I have never heard of that before on modern day tires, I have a hard time buying into that. Years ago nylon tires had an issue with sitting because it would cause a flat spot.

Bob,

I've got a PDF file of the Goodyear "Recreational Vehicle Tire and Care Guide" that states:
Quote:
A vehicle in storage should be placed on blocks to remove weight from the tires
"¢ If the vehicle cannot be put on blocks, follow
these steps for tire protection:
- Unload the vehicle so that minimum weight
will be placed on the tires
- Inflate tires to recommended operation
pressure plus 25%
- Ensure that the rim manufacturer's inflation
capacity is not exceeded
- Make sure storage surface is firm, clean,
well-drained and reasonably level
- Avoid moving the vehicle during extremely
cold weather
- Move the vehicle at least every three months to prevent ozone cracking in the tire bulge area, as well as "flat-spotting" from prolonged strain of sidewall and tread deflection
- Adjust inflation before putting the vehicle back into ervice.
Quote:
Once installed, tires need regular use. Long storage periods should be avoided.
Copies available here.

John,

Thanks for the information. I guess one can jack each wheel and rotate the wheel and tire to satisfy this three month requirement and not have to move the trailer? I guess this also means bump up the air pressure to 137.5 PSI.

Anybody know what our aluminum rims are rated at?

Bob,
137.5 PSI or 948.029127809 kPa I REALLY need to get a life! I thought I was the only one to do the math.

Sorry I don't know the rim rating. I'm feel sure it's OK though. I let our rig sit 4 months in AZ this winter, so far with no ill effects. That's the longest it's set though in the 2 years we have owned it. I will definatly replace the tires probably in the next year to year and a half, just for safety sake. This is our home and I'm not gambling.

I have heard of folks having a blow out on 4 to 6 year old tires and replacing them one at a time (when they blow). Didn't think they needed to replace them all at once "'cause the tread still looked good".

Later, Tom

I don't know which wheel Peterson uses but if they're Alcoa's, they contend that their aluminum wheels have the highest load rating of any 16-inch forged wheel in the industry @ 3,750 pounds. That wheel has a maximum cold inflation rating of 110 psi, no extra margin at all for a tire rated to carry the same pressure.

( Alcoa .pdf link, go to page 7. )

Surely somebody knows what the Excel's aluminum wheels are inflation rated to. Would it tell you on the wheel?

Our Excel wheels have 110psi stamped on the back or inside of the wheel.

Virgil,
I'll check my wheels tomorrow -- Goodyear states in their "RV Tire and Care Guide" that " This tire requires a special high load capacity wheel and high-pressure tire valve. Consult wheel manufacturer for proper application."

Recommended PSI is 110 with a load rating of 3,750 lbs. and a maximum speed of 75 mph. If the wheels are rated at 110 psi maximum, that leaves no margin for over-inflation.

Any mention of a recall or adjustment when replacing affected tires?
