We recently had an unexpected hail storm & high winds, weren't able to get TT in the barn. At first glance, didn't look like it had suffered much damage. But upon a more intensive examination, found that the most of the vents had damage and one was completely broken (luckily it was above the shower, so no major water damage)DH stated that the roof was pretty messed up, but doesn't know full extent. We have been on a waiting list to get a damage apprasail. Question is, if we need to redo the roof what questions do we need to ask and what should we be looking out for. We live in a small area with few RV places and would like some input. I've been reading this forum for a short while now and think that there are several of you out there that will be very helpful in giving some sound advice, to two realitively new RV newbies.
Thanks Paula

Do you have the Limited with the fiberglass roof, or an RT or Classic with the rubber roof?

Either way, I wouldn't think you'd have to "redo" the roof, just simply replace the damaged vents. If you have the Limited with the fiberglass roof and there are some dents in it (does fiberglass dent?), unless the fiberglass is broken allowing the infiltration of water, I wouldn't worry about it. After all, no one is going to see the roof unless they climb up the ladder...it's simply a cosmetic problem.

Linda,
In okies profile, it shows their unit is a '95 Knobble Squire so if I'm not mistaken he has a fiberglass roof. You answer seem good to me.

BTW...we had drinks with Donna and Ron the about 2 weeks ago. Now I know alot more about you and Earl! Just kiddin'...we had fun.
Tom

Doug,

Isn't that a itty bitty dealer? I think I've driven by it a while back. Tom

Tom,

Most dealers in Kansas are itty bitty compared to dealers that are in the bright lights cities. I personnally would trust them more then the bright lights dealers. Besiders, Chetopa RV is a Excel dealer. They have to be good!

Still,

Your right, but the dealer in Abilene is decent sized. I wouldn't call Abilene bright lights and big city, though! (My buddies Mark and Connie there have some mighty fine fried chicken dinners though!) We tried to deal with the dealer there, but it didn't work out. He usually keeps 5-8 units when we were there.

BTW..did you did know I lived in Kansas for 22 years before retiring (Overland Park)? I went as far west as Hays America on a regular basis. That's almost the end of the world out there, ain't it?

If Tom is correct and you have a fiberglass roof, with the information we have so far, would agree with Linda and Tom. The fiberglass should hold up to the hail without damage to the structure of the glass. If you have damage to the 'Plastic' parts of the unit, would also check anything not metal for possible damage as well, ie plastic body of TV antenna that holds the wings, and refig cover is your unit isn't side vented. You might want to check the side wall areas also. Chances of damage there might not happen as easly because of the impact angle, but if having someone looking at your unit it would be good to look it over close before they get there. If he's good, he should find things you missed.

To give other than general advice, would like to know what.....pretty messed up means. Getting it in the barn, to us Florida boys, does that mean...having leaves, hay and chickens on the roof as a result of the hail and high winds or after in the barn and things cleaned up....it was pretty messed up up there. More information please.

Chris

Hey Tom

Don't have a map handy-but isn't Overland Park near KC? My son & daughter live across the line in Harrisonville, MO & worked for a trucking co in Olathe. They figure they'll pull straws & "looser" gets to teach us to drive with the 5-er. ha ha ha. Oh, I guess that's LOL... Actually we want to do the OTR classes we've heard of at LOW & online. Problem will be getting TO them.

Linda

asked DH to be more specific, he said you could see indentions in the roof, (rubber). He's going to check other areas that were suggested and around the windows. Thanks. D&J-we are in western OK, bought our TT from my uncle, TT in great shape.Workshop-it was messed up from the hail, thank goodness we didn't have chickens or cows landing on it.LOL Normally store it in a clean barn couple miles from the house but kept thinking we were getting to go back out. Dumb mistake on our part. Hooligan- Overland Park is a suburb of KCKS, lived in KC on the MO side for 6 years, KS side was beautiful. Thanks for all ya'lls info. Paula

As I stated in my first response, unless you can actually see tears in the rubber, the dents are just cosmetic. And, if there are tears, there are patch kits that are very effective. It's highly unlikely that you would need to have the roof replaced.

However, since someone's going to be up on the roof replacing the damaged vents, this would be an excellent time to have all the caulking checked. Depending on when recaulking was last done, you might even want to have everything recaulked just as a preventive measure against water intrusion.

As it is a rubber roof. When I had my rubber roof replaced on my prior unit, it was glued to the wood sheeting of the roof. Believe the PI video shows the same. Believe once the roof is able to warm up, the indentions should level out.

If not as Linda stated it should be mostly cosmetic and the inspection should determine that. Would agree now is a good time to inspect the caulking.

Glad it wasn't worse and there was no live stock in the way.
