Insurance

We have a separate policy for the Winslow. I just got my policy renewal notice from Progressive and they went up over 25% from last year even though my full replacement has expired and is now agreed value. Never had a claim in 6 years. In fact, I've never had an rv claim in the many years of doing this, which I know makes no difference. I know I could just add it to my auto policy but the coverage is not nearly as good. My agent has limited options so was wondering what you other Excel owners might suggest.

Jim, we had have Progressive for 12 years now. We carry the FTers package with full replacement coverage which is expensive in TX. Anyhow it's gotten higher every year. I call and get something adjusted each year. But this year since we aren't traveling like we have in the past, I had them reduce our replacement value from $90K total loss amount to $50K since the rig is now 6 years old. It bought our $1200. a year premium down to a little over $800. I can live with that since we are selling the rig anyway. HTHs. I don't recommend putting your RV on your auto plan.....heard of too many horror stories when it comes to paying claims on that deal.

I am not sure what companies your agent is dealing with, but Farmers Insurance has a great endorsement to add a 5th wheel or travel trailer to the tow vehicle policy.

If you want to stick with a separate stand-alone policy, you might try to find an agent that offers Foremost.

We have had National General (used to be GMAC) insurance for 14 years and they haven't hit us with any major increases. No tickets, no claims and we have always paid on time. They also offer full replacement value for the model year.

Jim,

I have Farmers Insurance, I just filed a claim with them last month for a severe blowout that caused damage. During the initial claim process there was a bit of confusion, then the adjuster I was dealing with did some checking and Farmers has what is called a Recreational Products Field Claims Specialist. Once I started dealing with him, it has been completely easy. We finalized everything this week and they are mailing a check off to Excel Service Center directly.

That said, Farmers can be a bit pricey, however my rig insurance is only $632/year. But the vehicles have gotten pricey. I am shopping around now as I am about to get a F450 and Farmers quoted me like $300/month for it, I was like "thanks, but, No Thanks!"

Thanks. Our homeowners policy has more than doubled in the past 5 years as has our auto insurance, which is not Progressive. I also have a boat owners policy with Progressive which had a pretty good rate, at least for this year. I have done some shopping for the home and car but even with the increases I still have not been able to beat the company I'm with, Hanover. I used to be with Farmers so will give them a shot as well as some of the places that specialize in rv's.

Thanks, Tom for the advice about reducing the replacement value. If all else fails I will look into it. I get a little anxious every year at renewal time for any of our policies as the news is rarely good. Their price increases have certainly outpaced any increases in our income as there hasn't been much of that for quite some time.

TorqPup, we took a pretty good hit when we got the dually so good luck.

Torq,
It's my understanding from some of the folks out there with anything bigger then F-350 or 1 ton, the rate shoots up there. Someone told me there is a "work around" to reduce the cost, but I forget the details. Maybe someone will chime in here. Something like registering it as a "motor home"....but not sure.

Rockin'

Yeah, I am finding that so far. I am actually going to chat with Ralph some when I pick up my rig next week. I pulled her up there with a 2013 F350 Lariat SW. I used the same truck to take her down to SPI. Had zero problems both times. No issues stopping or anything. I have also rented a F350 Dually, these were usually work trucks and seemed to handle it just fine as well. I know my rig is one of the heavier ones out there, and you and I talked on another thread about probably doing a 450 with it. Since I am not really traveling a lot right now, and when I do, there is very little hill areas that I travel through, I am wondering if I can do a 350 for now.

I really appreciate your feedback and advise. Everyone I chat with ask if I have met you yet, LOL.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks again,
Torq

Any 1 ton dually 2012 or newer will tow our rigs just fine and well within weight limits in all areas.

I'm really not that ugly in person.....or am I??? Ha. Just a good ol' corn fed TX country boy with a IQ of 14. ;o)

we have blue sky insurance on the truck and trailer. my agent was able to leave the truck with blue sky because the gvwr of the f350 classifies it as a medium duty truck. rates have increased just like all companies but they are still the best deal for us. we are full timers addressed out of south dakota.

Interesting topic as I just receive my renewal policy with Foremost and my insurance/year jumped from $1100.00 to over $2500.00. I was floored and confused. Yes, we filed a claimed in October of 2015 for water damage and cracked gelcoat at the bedroom slide. That was a year and a half ago. I believe the increase in inappropriate to say the least. I have already priced out other companies with far better results. However, I need to allow Foremost to explain the extreme increase. Unfortunately they are not available on weekends.

I mean, really, what is the sense of having to pay insurance. I would further ahead of the game if I told my premiums and put them into a savings account and then when I need money for repairs use that. After all, if you file a claim they pay it and then raise the rates o recoup their money. Seems to me all we do is provide some person with a paycheck out of our pocket. I might as well just give my hard earn pension to my neighbor.

Paying for insurance is actually in case you are found at fault in an accident and you have to pay to repair the other persons property or medical bills.

Or to pay for damage to your vehicle &/or medical related expenses, if hit by an uninsured driver
(would require collision coverage on your policy and medical &/or uninsured motorist coverage on your policy for injuries to you &/or passengers in your vehicle)
