the DW and i just purchased a 2004 excel 33rse. we love it already. we are currently in a seasonal site near binghamton ny but we plan to go fulltime with in 2 years. (if all goes well) having bought a used unit there were some things that the walk thru didn't cover and i didn't thinnk about, so i may have some questions for more knowledgable folks like yourselves. (stroke stroke) hehe my wife and i are feeling very good about being excel owners.

You can participate in this thread anytime you move around ... or you can jump in here once you are comfortable with the group. The group always welcomes a new Excel owner and they will rally round to help you when the need arises... so sit down, grab a cup of coffee and read away ...you have a lot of catching up to do!

Hi nfish,

And welcome to the Excel forum! I think the 04 model has the same mechanism as my 05. You have to get under the unit and use a 3/4" wrench (mine came with a 5/8 and 3/4" rachet wrench). Counterclockwise lowers the spare and visa versa.

On later model Excels the spare is lowered with a hole in the center of rear bumper which activates the mechanism. It uses a crank to lower and raise the spare.

On my unit the spare mechanism had plaistic guts and the mechanism would fail and let the spare fall down while going down the road.

The replacement part was all metal construction and looks a lot better. If you need to replace you have to cut out the old and reweld in the new. Just FYI. I use a small chain to wrap around the tire as an extra security. More info can obtained by contacting me at my email on my profile. Also search this forum as there has been several threads posted. rockintom
