Chris (Workshop) has provided a well-documented posting on the restoration of his Excel compartment doors in his topic "Restoration 101: Life of a 2001" at the top of this forum. I'll be printing this topic for my Excel maintenance book!

Your right Chief. One of the best I've seen. Fabulous! Thanks Chris.

Chief,

Can't remember if your unit has the "old style" doors or the news one like mine. If it was "born" after Dec '04 it has the new ones. I guess I was just too excited to finally meet you and your family for the first time.....I didn't take note!

Chief and Tom,

You are much to kind. If you could have heard some of my thinkin' the last several days while I was putting it together, you would consider taking it back. Chief, what did you get me into.

IF you like the format of the post: A subject line, an intro and than the picture post, that is what I'll use in the future for most postings. It's a little more work in one way but having the text at the picture makes it easier/simpler to explain/understand the steps. Sure it will evolve in time.

This first one was a long post, as we were starting a new topic, decided to start from the beginning with the doors in case someone missed the other posting and 'came in at the middle' of the door repair. One doesn't know what to expect when starting a project. This included a repair, compounding and waxing and caulking/sealing. The compartment doors on my unit look so bright and shiny I will be forced to do the whole unit at some point.

Tom, the rims on my unit are the steel ones that came on the unit. When I was having the new tires mounted, I cleaned and did a quick paint with a silver matellic spray. Did clean and polish the stainless cap and ring. Saving the milk money for other projects. A photo can make things look better or worst than they are. I would chose the 'better' if I had the option.

Chris

Chris,
What can I say, you Navy types are a force to be reckoned with! I know, I've got a son that's a CPO. I "like the format of the post" and don't recommend making any changes in the format, etc. We'll try our best to keep your original topic free of replies and easier to navigate as you add additional steps in your restoration/modernization process with your 2001 Excel. Son, if you're not careful, Bryan will have you moving to SC and working for PI!

Chris,

Now that you mentioned it....I see the wheels now. That shiny silver gives an aluminum wheel "look" from the distance photo. Either way it "sho' nuff be shiny" and looks good from here!!! You be stylin' Dude!!
Later, Tom

Chris,
Your addendum providing uses/sources of tools and supplies to your "Restoration - 101..." topic is like "icing on the cake".

Still,

Chris Workshop is the real deal. I'm just ol' rockin'....the mouth piece. I barely got the oil change on my Tug today! I did love getin' some grease under my fingernails, though! Thanks for keeping me humble, Still!
