Marilyn and I use our laptops while watching TV or listening to music. We've found the computer desk in our Excel is nice and functional but not convenient. We've tried several portable desk/supports for our laptop computers but have not found any really satisfactory/comfortable set-up. The portable TV trays are one solution we've used as well as our laps.
I'm considering installing the Jotto Desk system. Anyone have experience with the Jotto or other similar desks? The Jotto's are nice but expensive and probably over engineered for our use as a stationary desk. I like the fact that the Jotto is fully articulating and can be stored out of the way when not being used.

This work? Or this? And here's a few more.
I plan to use the Jotto desk or something similar in the tug.

Chief,
Thanks for sharing. Looks like a nice unit. Have you used one of those cheap plastic lap platforms that you put your laptop on? Donna just ordered one now that she has a new laptop! She said something about me not sharing my computer well. What's up with that?
Tom

Thanks JimB -- I looked at these and similar TV tray type portable tables. We would prefer something that is easily stored out of the way when not in use and, being lazy in my retired years! , I like to sit in my recliner/rocker in the semi-reclined position and use the laptop.
Tom, I'm using something similar now, bought one of those USB powered laptop trays (WalMart)with the cooling fans to keep my lap cool! Satisfactory set-up, but would prefer something that would swing out of the way when I get up and stow (folded) when not being used. Not sure all the bells and whistles are worth $255 AND, if I was, I still need to convince Marilyn!

I use my laptop exactly as Chief described and Miss Jo uses hers while half reclining on the couch.
Jo tried the cheap plastic lap table and I see that she has discarded it. For a while I used a nice wooden version which has a cushion with beads inside but got tired of having no place to store it.
We both found the heat generated by the laptop to be the only objectionable part. We discovered that if I unplug the laptop and run off battery while using the laptop in my lap, the amount of heat generated was much less and actually not uncomfortable. Consequently, we both use them on battery and when we're done we plug the back up. In the event, you all get long winded and my battery goes down, I simply use a newspaper or magazine in my lap.

One other thing that can happen from laptop heat. . .my wife suffers from RLS (restless leg syndrome) The heat from laptops actually makes her symptoms worse.
We use a Ram-Mount in our truck, but I'm watching this thread for all the good ideas for the trailer

John, I installed the Jotto Desk in the front of my rig about a year ago. You are right that it is a little more pricey than some, but the performance and versatility has been terriffic. The construction is top notch, and they are extremely durable. I would recommend it highly.

Sarge,
Thanks for your input -- I've about decided on the Jotto and have added it to my wanted list. I'm still contemplating making my own laptop stand from off-the-shelf hardware. A flush-mounted or cone shaped pedestal table base would be a support option?? Wheels are spinning!

ChiefJohn,
The first one shown in DeepDoc's answer is a good option however I found one very similar to it. The one I found has a tilting table for the laptop with a side piece for the mouse, etc.. The whole thing is adjustable for height and tilt, on rollers with locks. We have one in the house and MoHo, they are great. Found them at Walgreens, around $24.00. Sorry, no pic.

Since I'm still looking for a good vehicle computer mount, as I see things that might ring someones bell, I'll add them. Here is one that looks good.
