Your observation is quite astute. You might want to read THIS.

Rusty,
I Hate to veer off the original subject, but I wanted to thank you for the link. Maybe there is a way for you to separate this part of the thread. Don't like to see a product picked on, but if it could do harm, we need to know.Ed

Interesting study. Wonder if there is a study more recent than 2004???

HERE is K&N's statement on their website regarding ISO 5011 testing of their product. Cutting to the chase, they state:
Quote:
Our actual air filters when tested (using coarse test dust) generally demonstrate a cumulative filtration efficiency of between 96% and 99%.
As you recall, the test I linked showed an efficiency for the K&N filter of 96.8%, so this is consistent with the range of efficiencies K&N cited.

Bear in mind, however, that even had the K&N tested 99% efficient (using the top end of their range), the highest efficiency filter in the test (the AC Delco) tested 99.93% efficient. This means that the K&N, at 99% efficiency, would pass (1-0.99)/(1-0.9993) = .01/.0007 = 14.29 times the dirt of the AC Delco. At 96.8% efficiency as tested, the K&N passes (1-0.968)/(1-0.9993) = .032/.0007 = 45.71 times the dirt of the AC Delco.
