A friend sent this video clip, reminding to me to paying attention to low clearances! Of course this could never happen to Chief, Virg or Larry (still working), as they'd see the roof, in their HDTs, of the building before the fifth wheel would. Be safe and be alert out there guys! Also, check out the 3/4 ton truck....even this SOB deserves a 1 ton! Wonder if the driver had any driving instructions...5er looks fairly fresh!

Tom,
Does anyone know the condition of passengers? I don't know how they weren't seriously hurt or worse. Sure is something to keep in mind.

I don't think I'll show that to my DW. She's just getting over being a nervous wreck when we tow. She could crochet a queen size bedspread in under 200 miles.

Marilyn was nervous enough with the F-350 and Excel in tow. Now, with 'Semi-Suite' at 13'5", her jaws never quit flapping about height of trees, bridges, etc.
Seriously, a very good reminder Tom. Thanks!
Corrected typo on height -- old age never quits?

I hope I am not the only one here who has measured his clearance, and has that number on an index card that is attached to my sunvisor.
Back in the days of my youth, I worked on the road for a few touring rock and roll bands. I learned another neat trick from our semi drivers. They had adjustable masts on their CB antenna's. They would always set the height of the antenna to the height of the equipment trailer.
If the antenna cleared, the trailer would clear.

That is the exact reason I am thinking of a full height HDT. It is taller than the trailer and would scrape the top and you would hear it.
If you are pulling like he is the truck would clear and he could take off the top of the trailer and/or the A/C unit and may not know until you got to your site and tried to figure out where the skylight came from.

Doug, that is exactly what we do. If the antennae clear, we are good to go. A few times I have poked my head out of the window to look at them too.
I feel sorry for this guy, looks like he was not entering the drive-in teller but was just passing by it. What a rude awakening.

The A/C unit on our 5er is 13'4" on level concrete hooked to the truck. That distance changes quickly in small clearance situations. The Federal Highway Administration says to allow + - 6" for pavement variations for marked bridges.
Then there is always the road cut under the grade-level RR tracks, where the concave dip reduces the clearance, especially for long vehicle combinations.
