New 2013 Ram 3500 DRW

These new numbers are pretty impressive! 3500s are no longer using the 68 rfe tranny, instead they are using the Aisin like in the 4500/5500s. There are lots more upgrades from the 2012s too. Below are a some links detailing the new capabilities including a video (third link).

Thanks for the links. Any idea what kind of wheels & tires they are putting on the 3500 SRW to get a 7,000 rear GAWR?

According to the article 10 ply E rated. I would think it needs a little more than that though.

They must be a different size than on my 2012 2500. I have the Michelin LTX AS load range E in size LT245/70R17, but they are only rated for 3,000 each. I was wondering where the extra 500 pounds of rating each came from. Maybe they went to an 18" to also allow for the larger brakes. The LTX M/S2 275/70R18 is rated for 3,640, though at a larger diameter.

Are they increasing the brake size with this increase in towing capability? I'd hate to pull larger loads with the same size brakes.

99,

There's no way they could claim the big towing capacity without the truck being designed to handle the load in all ways......including braking! rockin'

According to the article the brake size has increased to 14 inches. I have a '12 GMC 3500 DRW and if I remember correctly it has 14 inch brakes and I am limited to a 22,400 lbs fifth wheel. I have disconnect my trailer's umbilical cord to see how well the truck stops the trailer and what an eye opener that was. I cannot imagine adding another 7,600 lbs using the same brakes.

I agree with Tom on this one. But when you only have one engineer, you have several hundred customers telling you what you forgot. Or maybe just some of us outspoken types. Then you listen even more.

Yo Tim,

I hear what you're saying....but your truck is designed to have working and capable brakes on your trailer!!! I think what your describing would only do a good job of stopping if you had a HDT.....which is seriously over rated braking for the type of trailer you have. Let's get real. Just saying....rockybaby
