We are at the New Mexico Excel Spring campout in Las Cruces, New Mexico. I had no idea there were this many Excels in this part of the world. I think I heard them say that 81 rigs had registered. It is really neat to see the campground nearly full of Excels. There is a Goodyear tire rep here to talk about tire maintenace. As a part of this, each rig had the pickup drive axle and both trailer axles weighed. We got the individual weights for each tire. It was an eye-opening experience to find out how many trucks are overloaded.Looks like a lot of folks will be looking for higher rated tires.
We are new to the Excel Club and this is a really neat experience.

WOW, love reading about the tire maintenance seminar. Can't wait to take advantage of that. Exactly what I was talking about in a previous post. I am dazzled again.

That's the main reason we went to the Spring Escapade...to have our rig weighed on each of the 4 corners. Fortunately, we came out OK on all of our weights.

We did see two Excels while we were driving around the fairgrounds. There was a sign-in sheet up on the bulletin board for Excel owners...at the time we signed in, there were 3 other couples listed. Unfortunately, the person who put up the sign-in sheet didn't set a time and place for a GTG, so we never did get to meet any of the other owners.

Speaking of the New Mexico Excel club, are there going to be any other GTGs this year? We'll be heading that way as soon as we go to South Dakota so Earl can get his driver's license renewed. We're going to get an annual pass ($225 for non-residents) that will allow dry camping in the state parks for free. We plan on spending the summer and fall in New Mexico, so it would be great if we could attend an Excel GTG.

Slight correction on number of rigs. As of 6PM tonight we had 86 rigs here. We are told that is the second highest number of rigs for a state club campout. Seems like Iowa had 91 a few years back. I will post some photos later in the week.

Regarding the tire weigh-in. The Goodyear rep noted that at least one tire on 90% of the rigs at the rally exceeded load limits. Talking to him one-on-one, he said he was quite surprised that so many were overloaded given the quality and reputation of the Excel. Overall, he finds as he gives these seminars throughout the southwest, about 60% of all rigs are overloaded. Interestingly, the overloaded rigs at our rally crossed all rig sizes.

Besides tires, he cautioned, you need to watch that your axles are not overloaded. Make sure that the weights on all tires attached to the axle don't exceed the GAWR.

As one of those with two overloaded tires, I could try to reduce the amount of "stuff" that we carry. However, not being a fulltimer, we carry a relatively light load. Also, we travel with an empty gray tank and only 5 to 10 gallons of fresh water. So, I will be looking into to upgrading to load G tires and rims; not an inexpensive solution.

Who was the Goodyear rep. I am a member of the Mid-Atlantic Excel club and we just met with 22 rigs. Tires scare me and we would like to invite this person to our next rally in the fall and get the right info.

Thanks Bill C

I didn't get one of his cards, but I think Frank(Greenthumb) did. His area is primarily the Southwest, but he could tell you who the Goodyear rep in your area is.

I don't have the name of the Goodyear rep, but I do have the dealer who set the whole thing up. He could probably tell you how to go about it. His name is Robbie Mullins of Purcell Tire and Rubber Co. in Albuquerque, NM; tel: 800-968-1957. Great guy to work with; very knowledgeable and trustworthy!

Bill C. AKA Travelor,
The Goodyear rep is Mark Runk. His email is mark_runk@goodyear.com. Phone # 602-296-4664. He is the National Field Product Manager for the western region. I'm sure he can put you in contact with the easern rep.
