A couple of months ago we bought a 2000 Excel 30ROL. After the first outing, I was looking over the unit and discovered the copper lines under the camper were almost crushed from the years of highway travel. Rocks kicked up by the tow vehicle did a job on the lines. The people I bought it from had traveled all over the United States and even Alaska a couple of times. This is the only place on the camper that showed any hint of all the miles they traveled. If uou didn't know the year, you would think it was only a few years old. Click on the thumbnails for a larger picture.

I replaced the lines and pit those spring type tuebing benders over them to protect this from happening again. In the picture below you can see some of the bubble soap I put on the lines to check for leaks after the repair (I can't believe in the old days my uncle would check for leaks with a match).

wkayl....thanks for the warning and the interesting protection fix to the gas line. You didn't say whether you replaced the lines or just put the 'flex tubes' over the lines. Would assume you did inorder to slide the tubes on. The only exterior copper line I have is for the Furnace....as you have two lines, is one the furnace and the other the water heater? I will have to remember the flex tubes as a repair item...

Today I don't know how many people remember those spring tubes and flare tools once so common. I still have mine but rarely used any more. I also had to make a repair to a gas line, but mine was behind the pantry slide box.

Would you mine if I use your two photos if I can find a place to use them in a future photo post?

The lines went to my furnace and fridge. Yes, I replaced the line. Feel free to use the pictures.

They should really be running black iron pipe outside and changing to copper once inside...not copper outside.

Iceman....where is your information coming from? I'm not trying to argue the point cause I don't know....just asking. Both my old Excel and new Excel has some copper outside, coming off the black iron runners that are the main supply source along the frame. I also have a flexible rubber hose that allows the refer gas supply to run in and out as the slide moves. I'm not nuts about the setup but this floorplan has been around for many years. rockin'

There once was a day when we ran the steel line into the trailer and then tee'd off it with copper. It's been so long ago I may not have this exactly correct but it's my recollection that the reason we changed was that it was a code violation to have connections (tee's etc.) inside the coach.

At any rate, today we have no connections inside the coach except at the appliance.
