Goodafternoon just a question for anybody who can answer it. On mid duty trucks like the Frightliner sportchassis etc use for pulling rvs you see on the side of the truck body( Private Not for Hire ) is that so the truck is not for commercial use or to bypass the scales or for the ins. companies.

I put it on my truck solely to keep local police and rentacops from rousting me when we go to the local shopping center without the trailer.

The DOT nor the scalehouse guys care what I put on the side. The DOT can stop me anytime they want and could find something wrong. I can find no advantage at all except as I mentioned...most times you can park in a Wal-Mart parking lot without the local cops bugging you.

All that said, I have never stopped at the scaleshouse and have so far have not been pulled over by the DOT.

IN some cases the registration fee may be different if the vehicle is "For Hire"

Also, Parking laws... There are many places where commercial parking is either encouraged (That is non-commercial is prohibited) or discouraged (that is you can get a ticket) and I'd guess the hope of the rig's owner is the "NOT FOR HIRE" sign will tell the parking enforcement officer that it's not a commercial rig.

Of course.. I can't speak for 50 states (If you count DC as a state) just one (Michigan) parking enforcement in Michigan is decided based on the plate type

1234AB = Commercial 123ABC=Non Commercial

(NOTE: modern plates may have 7 characters and of course we not sell "personalized" plates and then there's my plates which are AA8AAA format, which is a whole nutter kettle of fish)

I think a big plus would be in camp grounds, saving you from having to tell someone you are not interested in pulling their rig to some other location. I even get asked that and the poor folks have no realization of what it would cost or they are looking for a sucker to do it for them for peanuts.

I put it on BigBit because that's what "Still" & "Smoke" said to do. I hope it works.

Tim, your so easy!!!

Keeps people from wanting ask if I can pull their rig when the LGT breaks down. Not really, I make it a habit to help most RVer's if they are broke down. It does help keep the Smokey from checking to see if I'm not commericial. It's not required by law here Kansas.

Still, you are so nice!!! I was referring to the ones that just bought a used trailer and you know in your gut the tires are rotten and the rig is not road worthy.

I have"Recreational Vehicle" on the side of mine, if I get stopped while not pulling I don't have to explain why I don't have a CDL.

I think I would put Recreation Vehicle on my truck because Not for Hire does not mean NON-Commercial just not for hire. just my .02
Retired truck driver.
