We're about to move again so I was up washing the roof today. Here is what I know now. Sitting under palm trees in Key West is MUCH more preferable than sitting under Sweet Gums and Loblolly Pines in middle Georgia. Man oh man what a mess up there. I may never get all the stains off. I think I'm gonna spend a few days with my chain saw here before I back the "Funhouse" in here next year.

Virg,
Oh my goodness, I know exactly how you feel. Been there - done that. I mixed up a strong solution of everything I had and added a little very warm soft water and got after it with a brush. Tough and slow. Going over and over again.

Remember..."it's a cinch by the inch...hard by the yard". A good one to remember. Good luck and be careful up there. Rock

Virg,
Are the stains brown and from the leaves and dirt or is it a gum/sap problem.

If brown stains, try using a little bleach in the wash water to remove the stains. Depending on the strength of the bleach might have to let it set longer or increase amount of bleach. I normally use it with a rag, wear gloves, and wipe it on to control the excess and keep it from going places I don't want it to go. Might dull wax? Rinse and wash well afterwards. Putting on this way has done a good job of removing stains caused by organic stuff.

Might be a shocker, but use Goo Gone to remove most sap from my pines when its not removing caulk.

Chris

Chris,

Good info. Thanks!

I not sure but I think you may have stock in Goo Gone or using it for "medicinal purposes". I did a search on it in this forum and found 94 hits and they are all from you!

Anything to get another post count!

Tom, I use the bleach/soap solution at least twice a year. Once after the leaves fall in the 'Fall' and again in the spring. Does a good job in whiting the roof. Just have to experiment to see what ratio works your the stains.

Know I didn't need to respond. Just trying to get my post count up also. Have a long way to go.

Been using a new keyboard the past several days...can't believe how bad this thing spells. Should try and repair the old one and take this thing back.

You didn't say anything about my "Goo Gone" spoof! What's up? Rock

I'm wondering if that Wal*Mart OakBark boxed wine will clean those brown spots off the roof.

Chris, thanks for the bleach tip. I'll give that a try. "Most" of the brown stains were Sweet Gum leaves. And I had drops of pine tar or rosin on the roof. GooGone will work great for removing the oleoresin residual.

I may be all wet but I've been using 1/4 cup Downy in 5 gal H2O, wash rig with micro fiber towel and follow-up with Eagle's Wax-as-U-Dry spray on wax. Make sure to rinse well. Rig seems to clean up real nice and easy. I can do the whole rig in 5 hrs. It smells "purty" too when I'm done. Then again it's only a year old and hasn't seen a lot of hard use yet.
