I want to purchase a spare set of breakaway bolts for the hydraulic jack landing gear. Does anyone keep a set and know the specs for the nut and bolt, so I don't need to take 'em off and level my trailer again?

Thanks.

Bruce,
I would measure the lenght of the bolt, the size, looks like 5/16", and just buy what you need in a grade 5 or better yet grade 8 bolt. I'm sure that bolt is not meant to break away. It mostly holds the foot onto the leg and also supports the leg by giving the leg a wider foot print.
Also buy washers and a locking nut for it.

Someone told me that the foot was designed to break at the bolt in case you drop it onto an object that would twist the leg.
No?

I'm basing my thought on the idea that the bolt would act and function in the same manner as the one on the front landing gear or other foot/pad design. As I don't have a leveling system other than 2x10's under the wheels.....don't know about the shearing.
Who makes the system?

horsey,
I believe the system is Lippert as is on my 2010 model. Mine doesn't have a bolt retaining the foot to the leg like Bruce's does. The foot has a male piece that fits inside the landing gear leg with an interference fit. http://www.lci1.com/OwnersManuals/hy...20Gear-Web.pdf Here's good general Lippert hydraulic system manual. It apprears to be a older one.......but I went through it and learn some precaution and good maintenance items material.
Bruce,
Personally I don't think that bolt is not designed to be a shear bolt....It was just an easy way to retain the leg and foot together. Now quit worring about it.....Lord knows you got lots more issues on your rig to deal with. Don't overload you poor old mind with the little stuff ..... wonder where you learned such silly trait??? Oh boy, I'm gonna get it now!!!! Having fun at your expense Bruce! rockin'

I do not see any value for the foot having a shear pin. I guess I need that explained to me in more detail. Workshop, thanks for the link. I already have it in my Excel folder.

Sighh. Ain't it the truth.
1 Furnace
2 Recently replaced lag bolt already broken.
Hey, my mind ain't old. It's just mature.
All that said, I think I'll get a spare jack bolt just for grins. I've talked with three people in the last few months (SOBs all) who have broken those bolts through errors of deployment. Bolts are small, easy to carry.
Thanks all for the comments.

Bruce, did they tell you what they did to shear the bolts?

Caught the foot on the edge of a large rock.
Foot pivots, keeps going down with thousands of lbs of force.
Bolt says, "Shear agony!!"
Now guy has a jack with no foot. Thousands of lbs of force on a small point of contact, i.e. useless. You see where I'm going with this.
Solution
Open tool box.
Retrieve spare bolt.
Reattach foot.
Move rock!!!
Deploy jack.

Bruce,
Great solution. I did just go out and looked at mine and they are 3/8" bolts. I wonder how many times this has happened. I would think that after many times of having using the jacks that any bolt will shear since they do have thousand of pounds put on them each time they are used.
Another thing to check every year.
