I've been shopping for new shoes for Journey for the last 3 months, as they are coming up on 3 years old and have about 37,000 miles on 'em. Don't really want to get into the summer heat and push my luck. As most of you know this tire doesn't have the greatest reputation when they get some whiskers on them. Don't need any damages from a tire explosion.
ANYHOW...Goodyear has a promotion on them right now (through 2/15/08) for $249.95 each. Of course, you got mount, scrap fee, taxes and etc. This special is running only in certain regions of the country. The RGV happens to be the right region! $1154.00 out the door. Not bad. I went ahead and paid for them and picked out the newest tires by date code to put back. When we get ready to leave the park at the end of the month, we'll just slide by and let the store put them on as we leave town. Hope this helps someone! Tom

Tom,
I'm curious. By now we've seen your (repeated) confession that you are, by profession, an anal retentive type. That, together with your career in the automotive industry, makes me wonder why you would stick with the G614 rather than moving on to some other (hopefully) more robust alternate.
Help me here buddy!
(By the way, today is my first official day of retirement. We have some personal business to attend to before we join the FT crowd next month, regardless of whether or not the house is sold in this crummy market!)

Jim,
First of all congrats on the retirement. You will love retirement. What fun. I wish you many years of enjoyment will come your way!
Boy do you have me "pegged"! You forgot one other thing.....I'm cheap! I believe that one day in the near future, we'll trade Journey in for a fresh one.....I didn't want to dump a bunch of money into this thing. While I do believe the G614 has it weaknesses, I don't believe it's as bad as it gets rapped for. I've got almost 3 years and 37,000 miles of trouble-free service (only one screw in a tire). It's in my opinion that most issues are owner related. I.E. low tire pressures, overweight issues, age, and just plain overspeed. We know the limits of these tires and do what we can do to not push the threshold! How's that for a weak answer?.....bottom line...again...I'm cheap!
How you can get these confessions out of me is just mind boggling!

Like Tom, the G614s that came on my rig served from August 2004 until July 2007 with no failures. We failed a road side rear tire in July 2007 and a curb side rear tire in October 2007, the latter resulting in over $2,000 in damages.
Goodyear replaced all of our G614s and paid for the damage repair after the 2nd failure, but I still have a knot in my gut when we hit the road. I think Tom may be right, though - after just about 3 years, our G614s started coming apart. And, yes, I ensured that all tires were carrying 110 PSIG cold before every trip.
Southwest Wheel, one of our iRV2 site sponsors, does have a 17.5" Alcoa wheel/tire solution to replace the G614s, but like Tom, I'm holding out to see how the "new and improved" G614s work out. Who knows, I may regret it....only time will tell.
Rusty

When I bought my 2001 unit in July 2007, of the four tires on the ground, three were 2003 and one 2000 mfg dated. The spare was also a 2000. During the inspection before purchase, I noticed that at some point both road side tires has had a blow out. Only damage was to the floor braces. After readings so much about this tire on the forum and them being past my normal replacement date, I used them as a tool to beat the saleman with and get a better price on the unit.
While doing the brakes and bearing repack, I purchased 5 new tires from Tire Kingdom. Date stamped for May of 07. When I first got price quotes, the price per tire installed was between $249 to $297 per tire at CW and Discount Tire. Tire Kingdom gave me a price of $195 each? I asked about his price and he called his warehouse for availablilty and price and it was $195. I left thinking it couldn't be right. Two hours later, I called again to question the price, still $195, so I ordered 5 for $1,043.
When I went by after work to pick up the tires, the manager informed me that the warehouse had quoted the price wrong. The correct price was $267, but they gave me the tires at the quoted price, I tried to give them an "out", but the manager kept loading them in my truck and couldn't get him to stop.
Still don't know what to think of the tire, will have to agree with what Tom stated.....
I don't believe it's as bad as it gets rapped for. I've got almost 3 years and 37,000 miles of trouble-free service (only one screw in a tire). It's in my opinion that most issues are owner related. But being weekenders, I'm sure I'll replace the tires on age and not miles if history repeats itself.
