We recently bought a Piaggio MP3 500 scooter for around town. So far, we think it was a great decision. Now we think we want a small two wheeled trailer to tow behind for grocery runs. I'm thinking something closer to a very heavyduty bicycle trailer as opposed to a regular motorcycle trailer. Any ideas for a trailer source? I even posted on the Vespa forum and have so far come up dry.

Virgil,
Lowe's sells a 4'x6' cargo trailer (item#145557) that a scooter could be strapped to. I wouldn't want anything w/ smaller than the 12" wheels. Bigger would be better. Is there a way to mount it in front of your hitch? Not knowing HDTs, I was wondering.

I guess I must have misunderstood what Virg, 'MakinSmoke' was looking for -- I thought he meant a trailer to tow behind his scooter?

Chief,

Your right again. Virgil posted this also on the HDT Escapees forum and found his answer. There are several places to by the little two wheel trailers like at Lowes.

Virgil.

I used have one of these to pull behind my Venture years ago. Worked great. It had a car top box bolted on and I could carry several hundred pounds if I wanted to. Now I use it to carry a little 2 man boat that I have.

JimB,
Larry,
Chief,
That (http://thekneeslider.com/archives/20...f-and-trailer/)is exactly what I want but they are not yet available in the US. That picture is what I had in mind when I started to look. Two different dealers told me they could not get the trailer nor the hitch. Soooo, I posted here and I think you guys all went to Church because I got nothing for a while.

The HDT forum guys always have good ideas and one of them sent me to Harbor Freight and I found a trailer solution for $199. It makes tracks about 44 inches wide, a little too wide but for $199 as opposed to $1079 for the other one someone suggested, it would do just fine.

Now, we're working on the hitch. A friend from the HDT forum knows a fabricator here in Gettysburg and I'm trying to get his number now. Soooooo, I think we are rolling, or at least will be soon.

PS Love the scooter.

Virgil,

Just take one of those Lowes shopping carts, a couple of rolls of duct tape, and attach the cart to the Vespa!!!

Think stopping power before you leap. The biggest MP3 has a running weight of only 538 Lbs so your trailer with load could end up weighing more than your scooter. There may be a good reason why you can't get the Piaggio trailer in this country yet and braking could be one of them.

I saw someone fabricate a hitch for a Honda 350 and put a boat trailer on it. I wouldn't reccomend it although the sight of that Honda 350 towing an 18 foot fiberglass boat at highway speeds when he blasted by me was something to behold. Just because you can find someone who will do it doesn't mean that you should.

Look at what you are towing your Excel with. Your not taking any chances there that's for sure.

Check out the link below, they claim to have a listing of all companies known to manufacture trailers designed to be pulled by a motorcycle.

Neil,
Thanks for the info, it makes sense to me. You talked about a link, but it didn't get in the post. Thanks, Tom

NeilV,
Appreciate your concern. My experience on the scooter says that a 130lb trailer with a 100lb+/- payload should be OK. However, if I test it with a panic stop and it doesn't pass, I'll park the trailer. At $199 I can afford to take the chance. You are right about OVERKILL, I really like being able to stop.

Like Tom, I would love to see that webaddress with all the motorcycle trailer sites listed.

Along with this.....

Will make a great looking little trailer.
Thanks for the idea of the cartop box as a body. Are you sure you are not the real Larry the cable guy afterall just masquerading as Eberle

Didn't I see a Red Green show on this? 'If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.'
