We have a new Westinghouse HD TV. When we try to watch tv using the antenna, the picture "freezes" about every 5 minutes and sometimes we even have to unplug the tv. We have experienced this coming from NM to FL. The reception is fine with the cable. Is this the nature of the tv, location, etc. ?

Neither of my TV's are HD. Someone will be along before long who has one and will be able to share their experiences. WELCOME to the forum.

jgtrip,
Digital TV behaves somewhat differently than analog when there are problems. The picture on the screen from a weak analog signal will get "snowy", while the picture from a weak digital broadcast will seem to pixelate or freeze. It would be my first guess that the signal strength is too low.

What you describe seems to me to caused by marginal signal that could be caused by a loose connection on the antenna side of the system.

Location can play a part. Digital TV and HDTV seems to carry a bit farther than analog, but 35 to 45 miles from a TV station can be marginal.

Make sure the connectors on the TV, plus video switch control box are tight, and that the antenna amplifier is actually on. Also check the connection on the roof top antenna.

I had similar problem that was corrected with replacement of the cable connector at the antenna.

I have noticed that in some areas aiming the antenna for digital TV seem to be more critical.

2 sites that can be of help

http://www.tvfool.com/

http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/Address.aspx#

On the road finding the over the air signal can be a pain, the old analog was easier, but when/if you find the signal most likely it will look better.

If you receive the same program in analog and digital, fine tune your antenna to the analog channel. Then switch to the digital channel of the same broadcast. If it still freezes, the digital signal is not strong enough. My HDTV has a signal strength meter which I can check.
