Two things, floor and storage, whatís your thoughts?

Ok, background: my refer caught fire, fire dept put 300 gallons water through it (claimed it was regulation). They put the water through the top vent and I think 95% poured right out the bottom vent however enough water went through the kitchen to soak the rugs. Insurance paid for all repairs but dismissed my concerns of water damage to the floors. So now I am paranoid. Recently a good size piece of the hard wood peeled away from one board. Maybe a coincidence because I do not see any cupping or warping, no mildew smell either. BUT, now the floor squeaks when I step on it right where the hardwood ends and the carpet begins, same spot the board split. I donít think it is any softer or spongy compared to the rest of the floor. Is the squeak normal with age is the floor about to cave!

Storage: what the hec do you full timers put on top this shelf? I had a fake plant there but think it could be more useful for something else. 9 months to join the retirement crowd, stop #1, Hemet.

On the floor- it looks like a bad tongue on the board on the right. You could replace that board....but thats a pita. If it squeaks, there is something rubbing. An old fix for sqeaks is to put some baby powder in the crack and the start stomping to get it it the length of the groove.

While this may stop the squeaks, imo you should still take up that part of the floor to inspect the subfloor to be sure there is no water damage that you do not see.

Mike......I'd be on the insurance company big time on the floor.

Here's the way we decorated our soffett area. All of what's up there was on 2" X 6" planks as a base to raise the stuff up with picture sticky gum (HD or Lowes) to hold stuff from moving around. Nothing moved in our last 2 Excels. We really liked it. I think the big glass thing came from Pier 1 and put potpourri in it. Dusted on a bi-monthly basis! I put 12V rope lights up there. Corvette clock that has engine performance runs every hour there is sunlight! Don't get no better that. Ha.

Thanks Tom, that looks pretty cool, I may copy it!

When the insurance claim was completed they stated it would cover future water damage if it became an issue. I am taking a trip through Nebraska/Kansas/South Dakota next summer. Maybe I will drive through Smith Center on the way back and see if they can take a look.

Be my guest, Mike. The gold charger was also purchased from Pier 1. I forgot where I got the Mason jar but it had a wine stem on it! Ha.

I was amazed of how well they stayed put up there. The wine bottles had color water in them. No way would I let wine go bad while we rode down the road! Ha.
