I carry a portable water softner and just love it. I just don't ever see anyone esle in the campgrounds using one. I buy all bottled water for drinking, so I use the soft water in the bunk house all the time or when I wash my trailer or truck. Any body esle using one of these? One of America's homeless and proud of it!

We used to have one when we had our first fifth wheel. While the soft water is nice, it was a PITA to recharge and to find a place to store it, so doubt we'll get another one.

We use the Travelsoft water softener. Love it. We had one for 15 yrs. in our stick and brick. I did try a "On the Go" unit but couldn't keep it softening for more than a day or two. Tried everything.....they gave me my money back. It is a PITA to deal with it in and out of the bay, but worth it to us, especially down here in AZ where the faucet water is 35 grains!!!

Nobody else uses water softener? Anyone have it permanently attached to your rig?

Instead of a water softener, try a reverse osmosis unit.... dont have to recharge, just change membreane every few years... Our Alpine has a Vagabond RO unit... NO water spots!!! Wiil take that high disolved solids content of your Arizona water down to practically non existent

Hugh, doesn't a reverse osmosis unit go through a lot of water to create one gallon of treated water? What do you do when you're boondocking?

Linda,
RO units do typically use a lot of water and there are several options that will reduce that aspect of it. Rather than trying to hit all of them (I certainly am NOT an expert on this) I will refer you to this post from the Alpine owners forum

vagabond purification system.
In this particular thread one of the posters states that he "turns down" the waste water and still gets satisfactory results when boondocking. A second alternative of course is to fill your tank with the RO water at home.

To get even more information try going to "find" at the top and type in vagabond and unclick search this forum only and click on search. There are several discussions on this system.

Hope this helps
