We plan on buying a GMC or Chev 3500, D/A, DRW.

Since we will be first time 5th wheel owners we need advice on what hitch to install in the truck. We plan on ordering the Glide Ride Pin Box from PI.

Do we need to spend the $ for an air-ride hitch like a TrailerSaver or will a standard hitch work just as well? I did read Bryan Tillett's (PI) message about not needing the Mor/Ryd Suspension System on an Excel trailer due to the superior box tube frame.

However, we don't want to feel any bucking in the truck when going down the road.

We have a Reese 18k hitch w/ Trail Air Pin Box. Works like a dream; absorbs the push/pull and bounce for truck and rv.

Bill,

I am using a Reese 20K and the Demco Glide Ride pin box. It works great with no chucking at all. The heavy pin weight makes the truck take care of the up and down. What ever you do regarding a hitch just make sure you get one with an articulating head.

Good choice with the Demco, we love ours.

I have a Reese signature series 18K hitch, 4 way pivot. (left, right, front, back)

In our Company Truck, 2003 Chevy 1 Ton, 4 Door Long Box, we have install the Pullrite 20.5 with Super Rails. The hitch has it's full pivot, side to side, front to rear. Also with the king pin locking system, there is only .030 tolerance between the king pin and the latch- minimizing the "bump" felt towing. Their 140 degree latching system wraps around the king pin, totally enclosing the pin in the latch.
What is nice with the hitch on the Super Rail System is when we remove the hitch from the truck, is the rails will can also be removed and we have nothing left in the truck bed, giving us the complete truck bed again. Now if you are thinking about short box, Pullrite offers there fully automatic slider hitch as well with the optional Super Rail Kit.
This is our Hitch of choice.

Since we will eventually buy a slide-in truck camper, we wanted a hitch that could be taken out and leave a clean bed. Therefore, we got the B&W Turnover Ball Hitch together with the Companion Fifth Wheel Hitch.

It works great, and we really like the jaws on the hitch -- very similar to the Binkley/Holland head we had on our FL-60.

Although we are not Excel owners yet , we have the Companion hitch that Linda addressed in her message.
Love it. When not using the hitch everything can be removed from the truck to leave a totally empty bed.
The hitch is very well made and the jaws are thicker than many units to provide for less pin-to-jaw movement.

I agree with the above posts on the B&W hitch. I really like ours.
