I had an experience that was similar, but not exactly the same. My Challenger's steps jammed, too. Fortunately for me, they jammed in the up position. By the way, I'm pretty faithful in lubricating the linkage. I even use the Kwikee brand spray lube and make sure I hit all of the points shown in the manual for the step.
I checked fuses, cleaned and tightened the ground wires at the step end - they're in a really dirty place. All this to no avail.
When I got home and had more tools and time, I finally corrected the fault. For some reason the gearbox that moves the extension arm was jammed up. I pulled the motor from the step - it took a bit of coaxing after the bolts were removed. When I finally got the motor separated from the gearbox there was a "pop" and the steps freefell into the extended position.
The gearbox and extension arms felt smooth and lubricated. After worrying over the pieces for awhile I decided to simply reinstall the motor and see what happened.
The step has worked perfectly ever since. (?????) Not one false operation during a three week trip.
It's almost as though the limit switch didn't stop the motor where it should have on the last retraction cycle and the motor overran and bound up the gears in the transmission.
