Hi all,
Hope your Thanksgiving was a good one. We went to north of Little Rock to be with my mother for T'day. Was a good time. On the way back (600 miles) the "Check Engine Light/Msg" came on twice for about 20 seconds. I quick glance at the gauges all looked normal. and the msg went off. Didn't notice anything different in engine power. I wonder what caused this. This in on a 2008 Cummings, 360HP.

Thanks Ron

You need to buy a ScanGauge so you can see what's really going on. The idiot gauges only tell you something is wrong 2 seconds before your motor blows up. The SG will also show all codes so you can find out what is wrong. Cheap insurance.

There is no one here who can tell you what went wrong with over 1000 codes that can be generated. Only a gauge can.

I put an app called Torque on my android phone. It's free unless you want the pro then it is $5.00. I purchased an obd2 bluetooth connecter from ebay for $23.00. The obd2 gets connected to the computer port under the steering wheel. It is bluetoothed to your android device and read by the app torque. The nice feature of torque is that you can set up whatever displays you want ei: fuel in tank, miles per gallon, average miles per gallon, throttle position etc. It also reads the error codes and logs them. Another nice feature is that when you read an error code, you can look it up on the net and it will tell you what the code pertains to. It also allows you to reset engine light. It's easy to use and very accurate.

Bobabob,
I got the obdII bluetooth today. Where is the connector located? I didn't see it below the steering wheel.

Ahh phooy,

If your rig is a freightliner diesel, you will not find an obdII connector. Diesels don't use obd, sorry.

God Luck,
Bill

You need a J1939. Are you sure your dash gauges can't read out the code? Read the manual, most have a code reader built in.

x2. On an 08 Freightliner chassis, you should have the LBCU (light bar control unit), a 3-line lcd panel. Read the manual (sorry, I don't remember exactly how to access this) -- you can get any codes stored, then look them up online. Hint: you may find there are no codes stored, which probably means you had a transient "check engine" caused by power blip or other non-critical gremlin.
