Gee, and here I thought you were just going to step back and enjoy the winter weather up there in the Northern climate for awhile. . .

As an aside, I'll be heading up through the Smokies sometime in late March / to early and late April. Maybe this time our path will cross somewhere on the road.

I spent the day winterizing, cleaning out all the mice attracting goodies, and cleaning out the bays. Now I need to start planning the next trip!

You'll have to give me specifics once the time comes!

I went thru a bunch of class a's at the local rv show last week. I kept ducking the entire time. I so much appreciate the massive headroom in my outlaw. The outlaw may not be as wide with it's single slide - but all that extra headroom makes it feel really spacious.

So glad you all started this thread. We have a 2007 3611 Workhorse W22 (second owner) we got in Tx. We love it too.

I have seen very little owner interaction on the web until today when I was looking for Outlaw pictures using Google Image search for Damon Outlaw. Schaffer's photo out the rear with the ramp as a deck popped-up a few rows from the top of the search.

Will check back often. Thanks for posting your stories about this great RV.

A note about the low mileage numbers others are getting. I have been getting a "pretty good" combined 9-10 mpg average (measured by calculating fill-up/miles traveled). Mine is a '07 Outlaw on the W22 Workhorse (toad on a dolly). That's a GM 8.1L (496 cu in) V8 with an Allison1000 (6 speed).

On the highway in flat terrain, it's showing 12-14mpg (instant mileage). In stop and go (City) it shows 6-9mpg (instant mileage).

I believe the mileage is better with the (discontinued) GM over Ford, despite equal HP ratings for 3 reasons: 1. Displacement (8.1L/496" vs. 6.8L/415") allows the GM to reach peak HP at a lower RPM. 2. Gear (6spd vs, 5spd) give the engine more ratios to keep in it's powerband. 3. Less moving parts in the V8 vs. V10. It's just like the power provided by the I-6 Cummins TDI being equal to the larger Diesel V8's of Powerstroke and Duramaxx.

The Freightliner (FRED) Diesel wasn't available in the Outlaw until 2009, but I'm not surprised at low mileage reports because its 6.7L I-6 is burdened with emissions gear. The same low numbers are being reported in the new Ram pick-ups. We all should recall what happened with cars in the 70's with all the SMOG gear.

In my future is a STS (remote mount) turbocharger that according to the STS Sales Rep should provide 3-4 mpg improvement with 20-25 HP per pound of boost. It's not cheap at $2,000 for the single turbo or $3,000 for the dual turbo kit, but at $5 a gallon, it will pay for itself in a rig like an RV.

Mr. Schaffer, Could you share where you got the screen wall and what you use for legs to make your ramp into a deck?
Thank you, Steve and Kim

What have you done to your Outlaw? We've done a bunch of stuff, but 3 BIG Changes have really improvedour Rig:
1. Foam Filler and a temperpedic mattress topper from CostCo makes the loft bed a REAL California King!! Yes, I had to raise the bedside stand.
2. 1200W inverter. They come as an option on new rigs and are very handy to run AC powered stuff and the microwave without shorepower or running the GenSet.
3. 40" flat screen in the salon with a real pivot mount.

The last upgrade was required...really! I had to replace all the electronics after owner #1 removed all the electronics in the REPO process even to microwave. The only thing he left was the Jensen exterior radio (it's in an exterior panel in the 2007 model vs. garage mount like later years.

So, our rig has 3 new TV's including an AC/DC flatscreen in the loft. The radio in the dash now had a remote and jacks for flashdrive and iPod. The microwave is a 1100Watt Panasonic from Walmart!

While is was a little bit of a problem to replace everything, the purchase price was well below retail, because of it and thankfully the owner did not cut any cables or take the video switch, so it was simple plug and play. And he left the roof mount satellite dish so, "Dish network to-go" was a simple and easy to buy and install.

I love my Outlaw!!

This thread has turned out to be pretty informative as well as a place to get other Outlaw owners a place to say hi and ask specific questions.

I'll agree with your post above regarding the fuel economy of the various models and their mechanics. I'm a Chevy guy at heart but always appreciated the Ford truck chassis over GM.

I was disappointed to have found out recently that my Ford has the least amount of carrying capacity of the three. Foolishly I assumed these were purpose built but they are for different purposes. The Freightliner can carry a car where mine struggles with my big Sport Tourer.

If you want a real education on how and what to mod on your outlaw then Dan's (BpK9Miami) Blog is a must read. Hula Hut RV Mods and Changes

By far, the rear deck is the best thing I've done. It's supported with 3/32" plastic coated cables rather than legs which allow me to back out over a drop off. I can hook you up with the mounting brackets if you decide to go that route. I posted a link below to a slide show with all my mods.
outlaw_additions

The screen was made by these guys:
Garage Door Screens Prices and Order
Tell them they made one for me on 08/10/09 that shipped to zip code 08807
I paid $141.00 for a custom screen shipped to my home. They should have the dimensions but its something like 103" tall and 99" wide

Drop Frame - that's funny. I had the same experience visiting some traveling friends through town. They had a $550 k rig and I kept bumpnig into things and worried at the low ceiling. Just more reason to love my Outlaw!

You mean you don't have step stools scattered all around your Outlaw? You actually can reach the cupboard over the fridge? Hmmm, you must be taller than 5'4"!

I found that mine did the same thing using the Automatic option.

Mine has a "MAN" (manual) button next to the Auto button on the leveling pad. I hold it in for about 3 seconds and the light above it goes on. From there I level it using the up, down, left, and right arrows depending on how it's sitting. I make sure that all of the levelers have at least some weight on them.

Hopefully this helps.
