Ace Awning problem

Took my 2017 ACE 29.2 camping with a group we belong to. Glad I was with friends as I put the awning out and it would not retract. Mind you this awning has only been used about 4 times at max. It happened on a Saturday and when I called Thor customer service emergency line I got extremely little help. With a storm predicted for Sunday I got help from my group. I took off the awning motor and manually rolled the awning in, zip tied the awning to prevent roll out and replaced the motor so it would not catch wind and pull the awning up. I went through about 8 fuses trying to find the problem. As soon as I pressed the button to retract it the fuse would instantly blow. This happened last year shortly after I bought it, but then when I replaced the fuse it worked until now. Any body else have that problem?

Just saw your post. Have not had problems with awning yet. Like you, we seldom use it. Blowing fuses, maybe pinched or chaffed wire between switch and motor. Maybe shorted motor.

I have not worked on the awning, so don't know much about it. Can you unhook the motor, push the switch and see if it blows the fuse? That would at least let you know if it is in the wiring or the motor.

awning check

I disconnected the wires to the motor and the fuse still blew. Checked the switch and the wires for continuity and everything checks out ok. No short detected. It baffled everyone there. I have an appointment at a dealership for May 14th, so hopefully they'll figure this puzzle out. I'll be the first to admit I"m not great with electrical stuff (even though my father was an electrician) which is why I let someone more experienced check the wiring for me. They all asked to be informed when I find an answer. Just wierd. I still think it's the motor, maybe a hidden wire? Hopefully we'll find out in a couple weeks.

Hope it is an easy fix.

When you manually roll it up if you do not remove the motor you twist some wires together, Or break them

Had that happen where I'm parked not, not my RV but a neighbors and he came to me for help. don't knwo why, but we rolled it up manually (Removed screws as per manual) and broke a wire doing it.

Survived the stomr but called the RV Girl, (She's a mobile RV tech, that's her license plate, if you are near Flint, MI Nordstrum's RV) and she came out and found the motor was toast (400 dollar motor. Warranted) Replced it, replaced it again and this time the control box and switch with it.

Yup. stuck switch had burned out the motor.

Being in Delaware I can't use RV Girl, but thanks for the info. I'm anxious to find out what it is. We could not find a short, so conceivable that the switch just stuck. Last year when I roll it out it got to the end and started to roll itself back in rolling in the wrong direction. Assumed I held the switch in too long. Pushed it out again and then went to bring it back in and the fuse blew. When I replaced the fuse it worked fine up until this. But as I mentioned earlier, it's only been used about 4 times, and only about twice since that first fuse blew. I'm thankful for all information I can get.

Dealer found the problem. Seems that during manufacturing one of the screws they put in was in contact with the wire to the awning. The dealer took my ACE on 5/7/18 (early due to cancellation) but they still have it. Trying to find out what's going on, they didn't return my call today. I'll try again tomorrow.

Got ACE back and awning works great. Not sure how to upload pics but I'll try to get them to post. During manufacturing they put a screw right through the wire for the "in" part of the switch. The wire contacted the screw and caused a dead short. Paid $693 to get it repaired, and now have to go to Thor with pics and story and get them to pay for it. Sounds like it may be an argument as the Thor rep I spoke with initially said he'd fight for them to pay part of the bill. We'll see. Now to post the pics...okay..going to have to research uploading pics. I'll post when I figure it out.

I'm guessing your coach is a 2016. Would be nice if Thor helped out. Definitely a factory issue.

They sold it as a 2017 and it's what paperwork states, so it better be. The frame and motor may be 2016 from Ford. I sent the Thor agent all the info he requested yesterday by email so we will see what they come up with. If I don't hear soon I'll start bugging the agent. Have no fear I will post as this progresses.
