Changing Thermostat in ACE

I have a 2014 ACE 30.2. The Thermostat Thor installed is pretty basic and seems to have a large tolerance in temperature in auto mode. Temperature fluctuations seem to be large while in auto mode. I have to get up in the night several times to adjust temperature to stay comfortable. I also have to turn on the lights to see the thermostat since it is not illuminated. Which then wakes up my two year old. Who then cries and wakes up everyone else. I realize there are other factors that contribute to keeping a constant temperature in the RV but I don't believe the cheap thermostat is helping. Looking to get a digital replacement with back lighting.

Has anybody changed their thermostat? If so, what is the level of difficulty for a non-electrician and what brand did you replace it with.

Also, do you think this will improve the large temperature fluctuations (which I have measured with a thermometer to be up to 10degrees F)

Thanks for the help.

I wish you GOOD luck. We have the same issue with our MH. I have plans to change ours but stillrresearching it. Seems a small fan helps to move the air and keep it more comfortable.

Ours is the same way, I looked at getting a digital one but it said something about cutting wires. Not sure if there is a digital one that will just plug in to the current wiring? Hope somebody here knows.

I replaced the analog thermostat with the digital Coleman and it made a world of difference. The analog unit was not reliable, the digital unit has been much more accurate, well worth the $70.00, and it only took me 5 minutes to connect it.

Did it plug in to existing wires or did you have to cut wires?

Search "Replacing RV Thermostat" on Google. There is a lot of information about installing a Honeywell digital thermostat which can be purchased for $25 to $30 at Lowes, Home Depot etc. I made the change on my ACE and it worked great.

Very interesting subject.
I too have wondered if a standard residential thermostat would work. The cheapy ones that come in most entry level motorhomes are crap.
I do know one does need to at least know what wires and what type of HVAC system one has prior to simply installing any thermostat.
Bdickson, which Honeywell model did you purchase?

The Instructions I found on Google talk about adding a variable speed switch for the fan. RV AC are designed to have variable fan speed. Home AC's don't. So if you use the $70 RV digital thermostat it has built in fan speed control. If you use a home version digital thermostat from Home Depot for $30 bucks you will have to add a variable fan speed switch.

For those who have changed to a home version thermostat did you add this fan speed switch.

Thanks for all the responses.

The big box stores carry Honey well brand of digital thermostat. We changed the TT analog one and it work great. They are around $25. Unless you want to program one to make constant adjustments just get the cheapest basic one and it will work great. I did not have to cut or solder any wires. That stuff is getting kind of standard anymore.

Make sure it has the A/C feature as well.

Don't spent the $70 for a Coleman you're paying for the association to a camping RV product.
