Electrical problem on Thor Serrano

I hope someone can help, I was just leaving for a short trip and a mile down the road my Coach shut off and smoke came out from the wiring around the steering column. It will not start, non of the dash lights come on,but it seems everything else comes on when ignition is turned on.
anyone have any info on this? I had to be towed back to my house.
don`t know where to start checking. I can`t find any burned wires around the steering column or ignition switch.
My email is fsd2@cox.net
Thanks
Ed

Start by checking all the fuses, the blown fuse will tell you the exact circuit you need to trace for damage.

Electrical problem on Serrano

O.K. It blew the 40 amp fuse that protects Starter relay,ign.run/crank relay
The "black"ground wire from the ign to the connector that it fits in below the steering column. is burned all the way down. Looks like the switch is GM,but can`t seem to locate a good #

I`d appreciate ideas ,I can`t be the only one!!
Thanks
Ed

The bent metal clip in the top front is an alignment tool that is removed after installation. It's used to keep the switch in the locked position during installation to synchronise it with the key.
The holes in the metal on the side are adjustment slots for the hold down bolts.
The switch is operated by a rod attached to the key cylinder, that rod goes in from the bottom and has a flattened tab on the end to keep it inside the switch , the switch has to be rotated 90 degrees after the bolts are removed to pull the rod out , and install the rod into the new switch.
Auto Zone has these switches and I think they also have the multiple connector with wiring to replace yours that's damaged.

I got to thinking about the wire that has burnt, leading to the switch, you said black ( ground) but I cant think of a reason for a ground circuit to run through an ignition switch , so the wire color may be misleading.
I'd need to see a wiring schematic to be sure.
I'll go to Napa & Auto-Zone on line and see if I can track a part number for the switch and wiring.

Is your coach on a Workhorse Chassis?

electrical

Thank You very much for the input. I have ordered a New harness /switchetc thru ultra parts. We by passed e verything & hooked a remote starter switch to the starter and got it running, then it would not shut off,and my mechanic friend pulled the ecm fuse & that shut it down!
Something shorted out in the switch.
At least I got the coach in the Garage, hopefully after we get it fixed we can go on our way????
I really appreciate your replies.
