Here is a pic of my first paint job. I never painted anything before, but decide to try to paint my 98 Hurricane. If you don't mind spending a month removing decals, another month sanding and then some more sanding. I enjoyed the project and took it to florida keys after xmas. Anyone thinking about paint their rig?

Boy, for not painting anything before, you're quite brave to take on something so large & exposed as a coach. You did a great job. It looks very nice. I'd say you've got a budding business on your hands.

Hey sucker (it feels strange addressing you that way, but no disrespect intended.)
That paint job looks great. How would you like to do another one? Mine is ready. Just want to change the gold-bronze color to a bit darker to match the jeep.

Thanks to all. I pickd the name sucker, because of all the money i had to put into this thing when I bought it for 19k last year. Now I want a DP. But, this is paid for and runs good. Our campsite in the keys was right on the atlantic ocean. We towed a 21 ft boat and caugt lots of fish. Here is a pic of our campsite view.

that's correct. I tired to get a site this year, but couldn't. I think the computer geeks have the edge when it comes to booking sites. I ran into a guy whos has been going there for 31 years. After picking his brain, I had the edge when i came to finding the fish. Of course the wife caught move of them. I was too busy baiting her hook and taking the fish off.

Sucker,

Very well done!! You asked if anyone was thinking of painting; I am. Mine is only a 18' TT but she is 25 years old and could use some 'freshening' (couldn't we all .

I would love to learn from your experience if you wanted to share the detail on how you painted your rig. Also what worked and what you would do different, in 20/20 hindsight.

I first sprayed one side with enamal and i had to sand it off. For begginers, urathane basecoat clear coat system takes less exprerience and takes advantage in new technology. I had to sand off all the enamel. Buy more expensive 2 stage paint. Entry level motorhomes usually have stickers over raw fiberglass. Some have paint on the bottom. The good news is, you don't need any body work, just sanding with a pole sander used for drywall. The badness is, remove stickers takes forever. Paint stores usually have technical guy that can walk you though everthing. take a pic of your rig and bring it in a paint store is the first step. after deciding to spend $600 on paint. the 2nd step is removing the decals. After remove the 1st decal you past the point of no return. Spring is a good time when it is still too cold to go to the lake.

Thank you!

How did you do the two-tone design? That looks really nice!

I just used the blue painters tape from walmart. The strips were done by hand. You can keep removing the tape and reapplying it until you get it right. Then mask off the areas with more blue tape and paper or plastic. I used a lot of vinyl tape. 3m electrical tape, but had problems with the sun. the sun would make the glue stay on the surface. I wish I new a head of time to buy painters tape that is UV resistant.

Nice job on the RV paint. I paint cars for a hobby. I can attest that you took on a big job & did very well from your pic. The prep is the biggest part, which includes the masking off of areas you don't want paint on. I usually use the base clear coat also. Easy to apply & easy to fix a minor mistake.

Heading for the Keys in a couple of weeks with 2 small tents & 3 kayaks.

Sucker,

How many coats did you use?

How long did you wait between coats?

I am assuming, due to the size of your rig, that you did the painting in the open. Did you have any issues with that?

How long did this take-- start to finish, including prep?

Can you tell I'm interested?

Sheila

DSbike,

You made a great choice on your destination. We stayed at bahia honda st park. They have some bike trails, a beach and you can paddle a kayak out to some islands. They a tent only section and another with some primative sites near a beach.

The paint job took about 3 coats on top of the primer. I had orginally painted the base color gray. It was supposed to be silver, but they put too much black. Then i decided to go with another shade of gold. If was to do it again. I would use some dark red and charcoal colors.
