Lost Power

Have been home for a few weeks after 3 weeks on the road. Our 2014 Thor Hurricane has been plugged into 50amp shore power. DW wanted to retract steps for Halloween evening and found that they wouldn't go in. On further checking there is no power to steps, generator, dash gauges, dash radio, ignition switch, leveling panel, windshield fans, etc. HOWEVER, we have 12v power to all interior lights, slides, awning, water pump. Normally, when we push to "USE/STORE" switch for batteries, we have an audible click. Today, nothing. I am not quite sure where to start troubleshooting. Any help will be appreciated.

I would start troubleshooting using a volt meter on the chassis battery then the coach batteries.

Post the battery levels so that we can better help you.

Can you measure the voltage with shore power connected and again with shore power disconnected?

Bad BIRD, no cracker...

ER. On a 2014 I would hope they have a BIRD (Bidirectional Isolator Relay Device) that lets the house charge the chassis (when plugged in) and the chassis charge the house (when engine running).

Suspects: Converter not charging: Cause on my RV. Once it tripped a breaker several times I accidently unplugged it (mine is a plug in model)

Some have had converter failure.

Or tripped breaker post-converter

or teh opening line Bad BIRD.

In this case your volt meter is your friend.

Measure voltage on house batteries. if less than 13 converter not charging, if 13.6 (normal float) or close to it, inverter working, BIRD bad.

OR a disconect was disconnected (User error).

Battery levels are all over 13v. Can't really get it down to exact voltage with my meter, but they appear charged. Think the battery disconnect switch is bad. It doesn't seem to do anything.

Lost Power----Still

Our lost power is still an issue and growing. After spending an hour on the phone with Thor Tech support, Gary is suure that it is our BCC and it needs to be replaced. He suggested contacting Total RV for availabiliy and pricing. Parts Dept was closed by then and had to waiit until Monday, I sent an e-mail parts request. On Monday we have extended warranty from RV Care and unlimited tows from Good Sam. o we decided to have it taken to our local dealer, Motorhome Specialist RV (MHSRV). Wrecker came (ABC Wreckers), proceeded to raise coach and disconnect drive shaft. They then towed to MSHRV. On
Tues morning I called MHSRV to find where we were in the queue. 2 coaches and about 3 weeks of wait ahead of us. An hour later MHSRV called me saying wreckr didn't reinstall driveshaft. Dealer said they had no way to lift to get shaft in. Called Good Sam and ABC and both said they didn't reinstall as it takes certified mechanic. Still waiting on info regarding availability and pricing of part. Wednesday sees us going to MHSRV to discuss what to do. Possibly have towed home and fix ourselves. We are hoping to have part infor before we go to dealer.

If your Hurricane is built on a 2013 chassis, it might have a FW-2050 BCC. Hurricanes up to 2013 were included in the recall.

Lost Power -- Update

Our BCC is FW 221, Rev B1 mounted in FW 2050 enclosure. According to Thor, actual part number needed is 0263303. I contacted a dealer Thor Tech recommended for price and availability of part and got an answer of $680. We went to MHSRV yesterday to discuss driveshaft issue and they ordered part for $311. Don't understand that price difference. MHSRV did get us in contact with a mobile RV repair that is coming to dealership to reinstall the driveshaft. Dealer is then going to jump across BCC and connect power direct so they can crank up and move coach. They have also agreed to move us to top of queue and get us fixed. Part should be in next week so maybe back on road by Thanksgiving. Whew....

It sounds like your system is maintaining the house battery but not the chassis battery. After everything is sorted out and parked for several days check the charge level on the chassis battery.

Yes, I know the BIRD system part is supposed to fix the problem. I also do not think it will be obvious to the dealer if he charges the chassis battery and then installs the part. Easier to check than repeat the cycle. ;-)

Congratulations, you have the same piece of junk BCC as many other Thor vehicles.

  • THOR A.C.E.2011-2013
  • THOR HURRICANE 2006-2013
  • THOR MAGELLAN 2006-2010
  • THOR SERRANO 2009-2013
  • THOR WINDSPORT 2006-2013
Need to change Hurricane to include 2014 models too.
